The traditional sailing ship Kaljaasi Ihana, based at Laitakari, represents one of Luvia’s many reasons to visit, alongside the church village’s architectural heritage and the natural beauty of the outer archipelago. If you’re looking for a hotel in Luvia, you can start by deciding which of these themes you’d like to shape your stay.

Architectural heritage in the church village

Luvia’s church village is a nationally valuable cultural landscape and a representative example of a coastal church village. Well-maintained wooden houses line the village street. Luvia Church stands southeast of Hanninkylä. It is an asymmetrical cruciform church with a gable tower and freely grouped structural elements. The National Romantic church building was constructed from sandstone from Satakunta; its façades are made of ashlar masonry. The church and village street show two distinct scales of architectural heritage: church architecture and a streetscape shaped by wooden houses.

Harbour and maritime history

Laitakari’s traditional harbour has 26 berths for traditional wooden boats. The traditional sailing ship Kaljaasi Ihana is based here. In the 19th century, Laitakari was a busy site for shipbuilding and loading sawn timber. The cultural trail at the harbour tells the story of the sawmill and shipyard site.

Luvia’s local history museum collection also has a strong maritime focus. The museum grounds include an old residential building, a sauna-and-shed building, a fisherman’s cottage and a barn. Luvia’s maritime side thus brings together the history of the harbour, shipbuilding and sawn timber with a collection and a museum site made up of a variety of buildings.

Mire, beach and archipelago

Porsmusa Mire is the largest remaining calcareous fen in Satakunta and the single most important mire area in Satakunta for the protection of endangered plants. Nature lovers can experience two distinctive aspects here: the unique mire landscape and the protection of endangered plants.

Luvia’s disc golf course has 12 holes and runs near the Porsmusa fitness trail. The fitness trail is close to the centre of Luvia and a playground. The disc golf course and fitness trail offer different ways to get active: twelve holes of disc golf on one hand, a fitness trail on the other. The Laitakari recreation area has a swimming beach. The outer Luvia Archipelago is part of Satakunta’s diverse archipelago nature and comprises more than 300 islands and skerries.

History on the coast

The Knapernumme fortifications were built by the Russians as part of a chain of coastal defences along the Gulf of Bothnia. In the Karhukiven lehto nature reserve, the Viimeisen karhun kivi memorial stone marks the spot where Satakunta’s last bear was killed on 14 June 1877.

Summer market and winter activities

In summer, you can catch fresh fish yourself or buy it at the market on Thursdays and Saturdays. Check the current market calendar in advance if you’re planning a visit. In winter, the sea around the Luvia Archipelago offers opportunities for long-distance ice skating and hiking. Choosing the season lets you weigh up summer fish and market culture against getting active on the winter sea.
