Discover Gerå through its landscape and trails: a meandering river, salt marshes and the coast give the surrounding area its distinct character. Three hiking trails near Geraa and Melholt offer a way to explore the area on foot. They are 3.7 km, 4.7 km and 7.6 km long, making it easy to compare the length of the routes first.
Hiking trails between the river, the pier and the coast
All three trails start in Geraa, in the yard at Sorensminde. The red route follows the Gerå in several places. The yellow route leads to the long Borgmestermolen pier. You can walk out along it and look far across the coastal bird sanctuary and the Kattegat. The green route focuses on a different landscape: it crosses the maritime foreland to the Kattegat.
Beyond the foreland, the green route also offers several points of interest. Further north, it follows the old Kongevej from Hals to Frederikshavn and passes Hundeskoven. Along a stretch of coast on this route, numerous suicide torpedoes and a large amount of anti-aircraft equipment were found at the end of the Second World War. This is part of the coastal landscape’s history, but does not make it a present-day sightseeing destination.
The route lengths make it possible to compare the scale of the walks; the descriptions of their routes also help you choose based on the type of scenery you’re looking for. Follow the river, head out to the pier or cross the maritime foreland: each route has a different focus. You can compare the walks by length and destination without combining the three into a single hike.
Salt marshes and birdwatching
The salt marshes of Asaa and Geraa were designated a wildlife reserve in 2001. The Aså-Gerå Wildlife Reserve stretches from the southern part of Gerå to the southeastern part of Aså. The salt marshes are a popular destination for nature lovers, especially birdwatchers: many birds of prey and wading birds can be spotted there. Bird activity varies by season, so the time of year you travel can affect what you see.
Gerå Strand is nearby, 2 km east of Gerå on the Kattegat and within the Aså-Gerå Wildlife Reserve. The beach is accessible from Gerå via Strandgårdsvej. From the car park on Strandgårdsvej, a 350-metre path leads through varied natural surroundings to the beach. There are benches and information boards about the birdlife in the wildlife reserve at the car park. Motor vehicles are not permitted in the Aså-Gerå Wildlife Reserve.
Historic houses in Gerå
The town’s architectural history is also part of its character. Gerå has several well-preserved houses from the 18th century. Sorensminde is more than 400 years old and the oldest house in the municipality. The fact that all three hiking trails start in the yard at Sorensminde connects a tangible historic landmark with their shared starting point; from there, each route leads to different landscapes and destinations.
