Venø Rundt, a 20-kilometre walk around Venø, starts at Venø Havn harbour. It follows the fjord, passes through Venø By and goes past a campsite. Along the way, you’ll also find the small Venø Kirke church and the history of a harbour founded by the island’s fishermen and farmers. This places Venø By at the crossroads of an island circuit, culture and maritime history. When planning, it’s important to distinguish the full 20-kilometre route from a visit to the town itself.

Walking Around Venø

Venø Rundt is a scenic circular walk. Along the fjord, cliffs, coastal meadows and small paths alternate. The starting point is in Venø Havn; from there, the route passes through Venø By and goes past a campsite. The 20 kilometres describe the island circuit as a whole, not just a stroll through the town. If you’re planning the walk, check the current route conditions and facilities before setting out.

Nature at the Northern Tip

The Nørskov Vig reserve lies at the northern tip of Venø. During the breeding season, it protects avocets, common terns and little terns; tufted ducks and red-breasted mergansers use the area as a resting place. The protected area thus serves different purposes: it is a breeding site for some species and a resting place for others. This adds a specific natural feature to the island’s coastal scenery along Venø Rundt.

Church and Harbour History

Venø Kirke is Denmark’s smallest church. Built in the mid-16th century, it has room for approximately 50 people. Parts of the original murals can be seen inside. Its small capacity and preserved paintings give the town a distinct cultural focus, separate from the longer walk.

Venø Havn also tells the island’s story: the harbour was founded more than 100 years ago by the island’s fishermen and farmers. Today, it is a cosy marina with several barbecue areas, as well as tables and benches. Venø Havn is also home to the Venøsund, a ferry built in 1931. It occasionally operates on organised trips and also serves as a replacement for the current ferry. These trips depend on local arrangements.

Gallery and Workshop

Venø Galleri & Billedværksted combines a gallery with an active workshop. It exhibits the owners’ own work in oil painting, printmaking and ink drawing, as well as works by guest artists. The offerings therefore span several artistic media and include contributions by other artists. Opening hours may vary, so check in advance when a visit is possible.

Getting There and Practical Information

The ferry crossing over the 17-metre-deep and 275-metre-wide Venøsund is Denmark’s shortest ferry crossing. It takes two to three minutes; advance reservations are not required. Ferry times may vary, so check the current timetable before travelling. This helps you plan the crossing as part of your journey without mistaking its short duration for a fixed departure time.

The Venø bus runs several times a day from Struer railway station to Venø. If you plan to use this connection, check the current timetable for route 346. The Venø app offers practical information, walking routes and a treasure hunt to help you plan your visit. Together with the starting point of Venø Rundt at the harbour, it makes it easier to find your way between your arrival, the town and the island circuit.
