In two bunkers from the Second World War, the Regelbau 411 Centre for Contemporary Art presents international sound, light and video art. In Struer Municipality, sound is also part of museums and public spaces; there are also paths through green urban areas and open landscapes. This brings together a variety of discoveries: art and technology, regional history and nature by the Limfjord.

Sound, Design and Regional Stories

The Bang & Olufsen exhibition at Struer Museum showcases iconic designs that have made the company a globally recognised brand. The Lyduniverset exhibition is aimed at families: games, competitions and experiments teach visitors about sound and technology. Outside the museum, Struer Tracks is an international biennial of sound art in public spaces.

Buchholtz’ Hus also combines cultural history with sound. The well-preserved home of Limfjord author Johannes Buchholtz tells the story of his connections with cultural figures from the region; a distinctive sound design brings these connections to life. At Gimsinghoved, art exhibitions and musical experiences come together in a green garden. The events programme changes.

Museums with very different collections offer further glimpses into past ways of life. Midt- og Vestjyllands Jernbanemuseum displays locomotives, carriages and railway objects, as well as photographs and archival material from Central and West Jutland. Access may vary by season. Thyholm Egnsmuseum ApotekergĂĄrden is housed in a building dating from 1657; its exhibitions across five buildings focus on life in times gone by. Opening hours are seasonal.

Kilen: From Tunnel Valley to Bird Sanctuary

Kilen is an embanked arm of a fjord that is now a brackish-water lake. It is also a tunnel valley formed by meltwater during the last ice age. As a protected bird sanctuary, Kilen offers opportunities for walking and nature watching. Its geological origins, present-day waterscape and protected status offer different perspectives on the same place.

The red-marked Kilen Rundt trail is about 13.1 to 14.6 kilometres long and runs through fields, meadows, forests and wetlands. Check the trail markers and access before setting out. For shorter routes, Odbysløjfen offers five nature trails or loops, from 1.5 to 6 kilometres long, in and around Odby and Oddesund. From Oddesundtårn, an approximately four-kilometre nature trail also follows the coast and beach meadows between Oddesund and Sunddraget.

The other routes also vary in length and character. Den Grønne Ring is eight kilometres long, passes through Struer’s green spaces and natural areas, and runs via twelve waypoints. On Jegindø, there is a marked 15-kilometre nature trail around the island. Venø Rundt is a 20-kilometre walking route along the coasts of Venø. The section of the historic Drivvejen cattle-driving route that passes through the municipality is primarily a walking route; most sections can also be cycled.

Water, Views and Local Specialities

For water activities, Cable Fun Struer offers stand-up paddleboarding, wakeboarding and water skiing for beginners and experienced users. It operates seasonally; check current opening times before your trip. Near Oddesund, you can fish for sea trout and garfish in the Limfjord. The car ferry to Venø is Denmark’s shortest car-ferry crossing; check the latest ferry details before travelling. Holstebro-Struer Marina is the largest marina on the Limfjord.

South of Oddesund, Struer Golf Club offers views of Oddesund, Nissum Bredning and Venø Bay. The 18-hole course is open to holders of a valid DGU card for a green fee; the 9-hole pay-and-play course is for anyone who would like to try golf.

The Limfjord’s oysters are also part of the area’s local character: alongside the European oyster, also known as the Limfjord oyster, invasive Pacific oysters are found there. The European oyster is considered a delicacy worldwide; local rules must be followed when gathering oysters. Venø Seafood offers a visitor experience focused on Limfjord oysters and shellfish processing. You can meet a local fishing family and learn about production. Check current booking and operating conditions in advance.
