Søndbjerg on Thyholm combines a varied landscape with a rich local history. Nature areas, trails and viewpoints are a key focus; Søndbjerg Church, the Holy Spring of Saint Mauritius and the Thyholm Local History Museum offer other ways to explore the area. Depending on your interests, you can focus on landscapes and outdoor activities or on architectural and everyday history during your stay.
Landscapes and Views Across Thyholm
The protected area near Søndbjerg Strand on Thyholm includes an east-facing beach, steep slopes, deep ravines and wet meadows. Søndbjerg Bakker offers a different landscape: this varied nature area also has deep ravines, as well as small bogs and lakes. Hills covered with heath and woodland surround the area. These landscapes therefore differ in their landforms and vegetation.
Dødbjerg adds a viewpoint to this selection. From the 15 m-high Dødbjerg, you can enjoy views across Kås Bredning as far as Salling. The formation of the landscape is also of interest: the area around Dødbjerg was shaped by the Stone Age sea, which formed fjord arms to the north and south of Dødbjerg. The viewpoint and geological interpretation thus offer two different perspectives on the same landscape.
Trails and Navigation
A 2 km marked nature trail runs from Søndbjerg to Tambohus and is maintained by Struer Municipality. On the route from Tambohus to Søndbjerg, the trail runs mainly over grass, sand, stones and woodland; it is not step-free throughout and has stairs in places. The surface and accessibility are therefore important factors when choosing your routes.
The Kilderuten on Thyholm starts at the local history museum in Søndbjerg and leads to the Holy Spring of Saint Mauritius. It is mapped but not marked. If you rely on trail markers when choosing a route, note the difference: the nature trail is marked, but the Kilderuten is not.
Church, Pilgrimage History and Museum
Søndbjerg Church is a Romanesque ashlar church dating from the early Middle Ages. It is one of the very rare manor churches built with a tower. During an extensive restoration, a hidden corner foundation stone bearing a runic inscription came to light in 1909. The church’s design and this discovery offer different ways of exploring its history.
The Holy Spring of Saint Mauritius is also part of the area’s cultural history. In the 18th century, many people made pilgrimages there; at the time, the spring was believed to have healing powers. The historical pilgrimage practice is a different focus from the architectural history of the church.
The Thyholm Local History Museum in Søndbjerg tells the story of everyday life on the peninsula from around 1850 to 1950. The museum includes a faithful copy of the old Søndbjerg School, with a classroom, which was inaugurated in 1997. Wilsehaven was inaugurated in 2013 and is a miniature version of the Baroque garden created by J. N. Wilse at the vicarage in Spydeberg, Norway. The museum is accessible for people with disabilities, both indoors and outdoors; a stairlift provides access to the attic.
