The protected Skuldelev Ås is almost five kilometres long and 20 to 25 metres high. At Skuldelev Strand, a small sandy beach meets a large, landscaped lawn; Skuldelev Havn offers views across the fjord. There are also places to fish and camp, as well as traces of cultural history ranging from church art to Viking Age ship archaeology. This means you can explore Skuldelev according to different interests: landscape and water, activities by the lake, or architectural and local history.

Landscape, Beach and Fjord Views

Skuldelev Ås is a striking focal point for anyone interested in the landscape: it stretches for almost 5 km and reaches a height of 20 to 25 metres. Its protected landscape offers a different experience from Skuldelev Strand. There, a small sandy beach and a large, landscaped lawn are part of the setting.

A bathing jetty is installed at Skuldelev Strand every summer. If the jetty is important to your travel plans, check whether it will be in place during your travel dates. Skuldelev Havn offers another view across the water: the small marina is set in natural surroundings and affords views across the fjord. The beach, ridge and harbour therefore appeal to different interests, so you do not have to limit your choice to just one kind of landscape experience.

Fishing and Camping by the Water

Skuldelev Grusgrav/Kildeskåret comprises two large areas that were formerly used for gravel extraction. There are 10 to 12 fish species in the lake at Skuldelev Grusgrav/Kildeskåret. Visitors may fish there with a valid fishing licence. This is important for travellers who want to include fishing in their stay.

There is a campsite by the lake with a shelter, water tap and fire pit. There is also a campsite and a shelter at Skuldelev Strand. If you plan to camp, check in advance that the relevant site is currently available for use. This lets you plan your overnight stay separately from activities at the lake or beach, and rely on the facilities listed for each location without assuming both places have the same amenities.

Church Art, Architecture and Local History

The frescoes in Skuldelev Kirke include moral tales, fables and proverbs. The church also has a chancel with an apse and a nave dating from the 12th century. Different aspects come together here: the subjects of the wall paintings and the medieval architectural history of the chancel and nave.

Skuldelev Præstegård also offers a distinctive architectural focus. The listed complex is single-storey and consists of four wings arranged around a large courtyard. Its layout can be understood as a whole: the wings and courtyard, rather than just one part of the building, define its structure.

The privately run Skuldelev Dukkemuseum og Legetøjssamling was founded in 1989. If you plan to make the museum a fixed part of your itinerary, check current visiting arrangements in advance.

Another historical perspective takes you back to the Viking Age: three decommissioned ships were filled with stones and sunk in the Peberrenden by the village of Skuldelev. This archaeological connection adds another kind of local history to the themes of church art and architectural history.
