There are different ways to enjoy nature during a stay in Kulhuse: the sandy beach, a crossing on the M/F Columbus and the Fjord Trail for walkers and cyclists. When looking for a holiday apartment, consider whether you want your stay to be shaped by the coast, a ferry crossing or paths through the forest and countryside.

Sandy beach with a seasonal award

Kulhuse Beach is a sandy beach with good water depth and has been awarded the Blue Flag. As this award is seasonal, check its status again before your trip if the certification is important to your plans. This makes the award a specific but season-dependent consideration when planning your beach visit.

Across the fjord on the M/F Columbus

The M/F Columbus runs between Kulhuse and Sølager. The peaceful, scenic crossing of the fjord offers views of coastlines, small islands and diverse birdlife. If you plan to take the ferry, check the timetable in advance. This lets you include the crossing in your day’s plans without assuming a particular departure time.

The Fjord Trail: nature trail and Regional Route 40

The Fjord Trail is a nature trail along the Roskilde Fjord and the Isefjord. The route, intended for walkers and cyclists, is 275 kilometres long in total. Small blue signs mark the trail, which also carries route number 40. This total length describes the entire route, not a single day’s stage. So for your own outing, the important thing is which part of the route you plan to cover. If you arrive on foot or by bicycle, the Fjord Trail passes right by the Kulhuse Shelter site. It makes a suitable stop on a longer tour.

Jægerspris Nordskov: forest and birdwatching

Jægerspris Nordskov is a continuous, ten-kilometre-long area of deciduous forest along the Roskilde Fjord. It stretches from Kulhuse in the north to Jægerspris in the south. This forest region offers a different focus from the beach: here, the emphasis is on an extensive forest area and its habitats.

The forest is privately managed and open to the public. During the day, you may walk and cycle there on the paths and roads. This time restriction is important when planning a visit. Parking for Jægerspris Nordskov is available at the end of Barakvej in Kulhuse; check local access conditions before you travel.

The red-backed shrike breeds in the forest. It can be spotted in hedges, at forest edges, in clearings and in bushes on the Nordskovsengene meadows. If you want to include birdwatching in your outing, you can look out for it in these different habitats; a sighting is not guaranteed.
