The cultural history of Kongens Lyngby spans everything from a medieval church building to an 18th-century watermill. It also includes preserved industrial heritage along the Mølleåen and walking opportunities around Lyngby Lake. When planning your visit, you can choose between architecture, exhibitions and time outdoors.

Farms, a Church and the History of Milling

Bondebyen is one of the best-preserved villages north of Copenhagen, consisting of farmsteads and smaller houses. The area also has the character of a workers’ residential district from the 1890s, established in former agricultural buildings. In the centre of Kongens Lyngby is Lindegaarden: the four-sided farmstead dates back to 1650 and now serves as a cultural venue in Bondebyen.

Lyngby Church is the oldest building in Kongens Lyngby and dates back to the 12th century. Its frescoes were created around 1500 and are attributed to the Brarup workshop. The building and its murals thus represent different periods in the town’s history. Nordre Mølle offers another historical perspective: the watermill was established around 1762 as an extension of Søndre Mølle and is used as an exhibition venue for art exhibitions and Christmas markets.

Brede Værk is preserved industrial heritage along the Mølleåen. Public guided tours are offered there; if you would like to learn more about this part of industrial history, you can take advantage of these tours. Check the current schedule before your visit.

Museums, Art and Events

The Open-Air Museum presents houses, farms and mills spanning 350 years of history. Depending on the season, visitors may encounter and pet some of the animals. Frøsnapperbyen at the museum also includes a maze. The Car Museum at Classic Car House offers interactive installations for children and adults.

Sophienholm is a country estate dating from 1790 and serves as an art gallery with themed exhibitions and events. As the programme may change, it is worth checking the latest dates. Frieboeshvile City Archives also regularly offers exhibitions, talks, city walks, as well as activities and workshops for children. Frieboeshvile itself was built in 1756–58 as a country estate for summer stays. The Lindegaard Concerts take place several times a year on various Fridays. Check the current schedule for concert and event dates.

Walks and Paths by the Water

The Mølleåstien – lower course follows Lyngby Lake and Lyngby Åmose, then continues along Lyngby Hovedgade. The Hjertestien offers a complete walk around Lyngby Lake. The two routes therefore differ in their layout: one passes through several named sections, while the other forms a loop around the lake.

As a cultural and historical route in its own right, the Handelsruten tells the story of the centre of Kongens Lyngby. It draws attention to selected houses and shops along Lyngby Hovedgade, both past and present. For a different perspective on the waterways, Baadfarten offers leisurely boat trips from May to September on Lyngby Lake, the Mølleåen and Bagsværd Lake. Check the current sailing times when planning your trip.
