Smidstrup lies between Gilleleje and Rågeleje on the Kattegat coast. Protected coastal grassland borders Smidstrup Strand, and the beach church adds a distinctive architectural feature. When planning your trip, it is worth distinguishing between the options according to their conditions: paths through the coastal grassland, the retreat’s guest-only walking paths, a seasonal bathing area for dogs, and horse activities on visitor days each offer something different. If you are looking for a holiday rental, these differences can help you weigh your interests in the coast, nature and culture.

Coastal Paths and Beach Access

The protected coastal grassland—kystoverdrev in Danish—borders Smidstrup Strand. It adds a distinct protected area to the coastline, with paths, benches and a fire pit. For a walk, this offers a different natural setting from the beach itself: you can regard the coast and grassland as two neighbouring but distinct parts of the area. The paths, seating and fire pit are part of the grassland, not features that apply to the beach as a whole.

The beach plantation at Refugium Smidstrup Strand offers another option, with its own restrictions. It has walking paths and direct beach access, and is part of Den Danske Riviera. The paths are reserved for guests of the retreat. You cannot treat the beach plantation as a generally accessible alternative to the coastal grassland paths.

For the 2026 bathing season, an area at Smidstrup Strand is designated where dogs may swim under supervision. This option is seasonal; for later seasons, you should check the applicable rules again. If you are travelling with a dog, timing is therefore part of your planning: permission applies to this area during the bathing season, not all year round.

Beach Church and Horse Activities

Smidstrup Strandkirke is a small wooden church, built in 1988 to a design by the architectural firm Hvidt og Mølgaard. It consists of a single hexagonal room, with a small glass lantern at its apex. Its floor plan can therefore be described as a single geometric shape, rather than a sequence of several rooms. Those interested in architecture will find a distinct cultural highlight alongside the coastal and natural attractions: the building is defined by its materials, spatial form and lantern. Its year of construction and the design by Hvidt og Mølgaard also help place its origins in context.

On visitor days at Ternen Besøgsgård, guided rides or horse-led walks are typically available. These activities are not guaranteed on every visitor day. If you would like to plan one, check in advance whether your preferred day is suitable and which activity is actually available then. This allows you to consider horse-related activities as an option without assuming they are offered every day.
