Jægerspris brings together impressive memorial sites with themes of forests and landscapes. Memorial steles stand in Mindelund, while museums offer insights into the history of the town and Roskilde Fjord. Nordskov offers a different focus: an ancient oak, wildlife and designated paths are all part of its natural landscape. During your stay, you can decide whether you want to focus mainly on discovering cultural history or also set aside time for forests and scenery.

Castle History and Memorial Sites

Johannes Wiedewelt’s Mindelund is a sculpture park with 54 memorial steles. They were erected between 1777 and 1789. Mindelund stretches from the castle park into the surrounding Slotshegnet forest. The steles have QR codes with information about the 83 heroes who are commemorated there. The combination of art, remembrance and historical context defines this place, without requiring you to set aside a particular amount of time for a visit.

Another focus of cultural history is the museum at Jægerspris Castle. Its memorial rooms include silk wallpaper in the Audience Chamber and an elaborately decorated stucco ceiling. Permanent exhibitions explore the history of the orphanage and the archaeological finds of Frederik VII. The castle’s rooms and exhibitions are both central: the rooms give you an impression of the memorial spaces’ design, while the exhibitions address specific historical topics.

Since 1984, Færgegården has been a local history museum for Frederikssund Municipality. Its permanent exhibition, “Menneske og Fjord,” shows how life along Roskilde Fjord has changed over thousands of years; exhibition content may be updated. The grounds also include a reconstructed Stone Age hunter-gatherer settlement. If this exhibition or the settlement is a deciding factor in your visit, check the latest information and details about the outdoor site in advance.

The Rejsestalden cultural centre also offers temporary exhibitions and a range of activities for children and adults. Around public holidays and during school holidays, Færgegården offers activities for families based on old Danish traditions. As the programme is seasonal, it is worth checking the latest dates before travelling.

Forest, Paths and Landscape

Jægerspris Nordskov consists of two forest areas: Fælledskoven to the west and Studehaven to the east. Roe deer and birds of prey are plentiful there, although you may not see wildlife on every visit. The King Oak in Nordskov is estimated to be 1,400 to 1,900 years old. In the castle park, a collection of wild rhododendron species from around the world adds to the landscape; the flowering season varies.

The Hjertestien trail in Slotshegnet starts and ends either at Rejsestalden in Jægerspris or at Jægerspris Castle. It passes through historic parts of Slotshegnet, which were laid out in the 1740s. The area around the trail is also of archaeological interest for its Stone Age passage graves and dolmens. A cycling route of about 14 kilometres is marked out in Jægerspris Nordskov. Route conditions can change, so check them before setting out.

Further afield, the Fjordstien nature trail runs for 275 kilometres along Roskilde Fjord and Isefjord. It is suitable for walkers and cyclists, although the surface and condition vary by section. Its length calls for a different kind of planning than the approximately 14-kilometre cycling route through Nordskov. Also further afield is Færgelunden, a large forest by Roskilde Fjord with burial mounds dating from the Neolithic and Bronze Ages. The protected coastal meadows in the wider region around the forests of Jægerspris can be viewed from Nordskov, Færgelunden or the water.

Getting There and Finding Your Way
