Melby brings together heathland, prehistoric burial mounds and a church whose oldest Romanesque structure is now identifiable only by its visible fieldstones. If you’re looking for a hotel for a stay in Melby, you can first decide whether nature and trails or archaeological and church history should shape your trip.

Heath, Trails and Coast

Melby Overdrev is in Melby and is the largest heath on Sjælland. Trails lead through the heathland and invite you to go for a walk. The North Coast Trail runs through the area, while the Sundhedssporet offers a short route of 1–3 km for walking or running. Trails from Melby Overdrev also lead to a sandy beach on the Kattegat, where swimming is possible. The nature options range from walking trails across the heath to a short walking or running route and a path to the beach.

The heath is protected and designated as a quiet zone; larger events are not permitted there. Woodlarks and stonechats find habitat here, as do adders, other reptiles and insects. In addition to heather, almost 200 other wild plants can grow here. Check local conditions before swimming and check the current condition of the trails before using them.

Syvhøje: Burial Mounds and Archaeological Finds

Syvhøje comprises eight burial mounds, seven of which were originally arranged in a north–south row. This orientation describes the site’s former layout. In 1967, a woman from the Early Bronze Age, dating to around 1500 BC, was found in the northernmost mound. Syvhøje thus brings together the original arrangement of the mounds and a specific Bronze Age find. Sheep graze at Syvhøje; they keep tall grasses and bushes low and help preserve and promote the population of the rare sea pink.

Melby Church

Today, only the fieldstones of the Romanesque church built around 800 years ago remain visible from the oldest Melby Church. The wall paintings date from around 1540 and mainly depict ornaments, foliage and flowers. The three-masted barque “Marie” hangs beneath the ceiling. The building, later decoration and ship are distinct details of the church’s history. Syvhøje and the church thus offer two different historical perspectives: burial mounds and a Bronze Age find on one hand, Romanesque building remains and wall paintings on the other.

Trails and Rail

The Melby cross-route is intended for travellers going to or from Frederiksværk station and town centre. Along the way, you can switch to Halsninoen or head south on Fjordstien. Melby is also a stop on the local railway line; check the current services for your travel dates. Note the distinction between the landmarks: the cross-route connects with Frederiksværk station and town centre, while Melby itself is a stop on the local railway line.
