ARKENWALK is a 2.2 km art trail from Ishøj Station to ARKEN Museum of Contemporary Art. The surroundings change along the way: from the station forecourt, the route passes through a residential area and a tunnel, continues through a villa district, and finally enters the beach park landscape with meadows and lakes. This brings art and a variety of landscapes into focus along a clearly defined route.

Art, beach and trails

The permanent collection at ARKEN Museum of Contemporary Art includes Danish, Nordic and international art from 1990 onward. At the museum, the café also offers views of Køge Bay. As café services may change, check before your visit if you plan to base your stay around it.

Ishøj Beach is also part of the coastal landscape: it accounts for about 3 km of the 7 km-long Køge Bay Beach Park. Paddleboards can be rented at Café Ka’nalu at Ishøj Beach. This means there is a named stretch of beach and a specific activity available by the water.

The distances provide a clear comparison when choosing a route. Alongside the art-focused ARKENWALK, Ishøj has four Kløverstier routes: they are 2.5 km, 5.5 km, 7.5 km and 12 km long. These figures distinguish the trails by distance, making them a useful guide if you want to plan around a specific route length.

Animals, nature and archaeological finds

Ishøj Animal Park is home to Scottish Highland cattle, marsh sheep, pygmy goats and Danish Landrace goats. The park also has a nature playground with an obstacle course made from natural materials. Bredekærgård offers opportunities to encounter animals and enjoy nature-based play. The town thus has a variety of attractions that feature animals and nature.

Bredekærgård is also associated with an archaeological find: the tomb of the Prince of Ishøj dates from the Roman Iron Age and is about 1,725 years old. It is on display in Bredekærgård’s residential building. Another historic monument is the protected national Vildtbanesten. Christian VII had it erected in 1775 to mark the royal hunting monopoly.

Art and architectural history add to these themes. Oscar under broen was built entirely from locally sourced scrap and recycled materials in 2016. At Thorsbro Waterworks, the engine house, the collecting well building and the valve chamber building are protected.

Cultural activities and practical planning

Ishøj Theatre typically produces three performances a year for children aged 3 to 9 and also offers classes and workshops. For nature enthusiasts, programs with a nature guide can be booked at Ishøj Nature Centre. Strandparken organizes ten tours a year in collaboration with Ishøj Nature Centre. One way to explore Tranegilde is with an interactive tour using your own mobile phone and QR codes.

If you plan to attend a theatre performance or book a nature guide program, check dates and booking options in advance. This helps you coordinate your accommodation search with the activities that matter most to your trip.
