Skibby is a destination for travel plans that bring nature trails and cultural heritage together. The options range from paths through named natural areas to churches and a castle with specific historical features. For planning your days, the different trail lengths, the landscape around Selsø Sø, and the distinct cultural themes are particularly helpful. This lets you decide first whether outdoor activity or the history of the buildings should take centre stage.

Nature trails and landscapes

The Frederikssund Hjertesti runs through Nordmandsskoven, Nordmandsmosen, and Midtbanen. It is 3.3 km long and was inaugurated in May 2019. The Selsø-ruten offers a different distance: it is 8 km in total and can be divided into two circular routes of 4 km each. In direct comparison, the Hjertesti is shorter than either of these circular routes. On the Selsø-ruten, you can weigh up whether one loop or the entire route better suits your day’s plans.

The Fjordstien and the Selsø-ruten pass directly by Møllekrogen. There is a car park, a toilet, water, and picnic tables there. Check locally before you travel to see whether these facilities are available. This allows you to take the information into account when planning your break, without treating it as a guarantee for the day of your visit.

The landscapes also differ: Nordmandsskoven near Skibby includes woodland, lakes, and more open natural areas. Nordmandsmosen is a recreational nature area close to the town, north of Skibby. The churchyard at Selsø Kirke offers wide views across Selsø Sø. The lake is a 500-hectare bird sanctuary; the viewpoint and protected area give a visit there a distinctive connection to nature.

Churches, chronicle, and Selsø Slot

Skibby Kirke probably dates from around 1100. The church has frescoes on the chancel vault and in the apse behind the altar. The apse painting is dated to around 1150–1175 and is among Denmark’s oldest frescoes. The Skibbykrøniken is also part of the town’s history: it was found in 1650 in the masonry of Skibby Kirke. Thus, one building brings together an early date, medieval paintings, and a specific historical find.

Selsø Kirke has a different architectural history; it was originally a round church. Selsø Slot was built in the 1570s by the nobleman Jakob Ulfeldt. At the castle, visitors can see Baroque paintings and wallpaper in the Empire-style rooms. Together, the two places add different forms to the history of churches and buildings: the original round church on one hand, and castle rooms with Baroque design features on the other.

Throughout the year, Selsø Slot hosts various events and activities for children and adults, including Summer Wednesdays in Nature, concerts, talks, and Herregårdenes dag. Individual programme items may change, so check the specific dates before travelling. This allows you to combine a visit with a suitable event date, without assuming that every format takes place on every travel date.

Plan your journey

Bus route 318 runs from Frederikssund station to the Selsø Kirke stop. If you plan to travel by bus, check the current timetable before setting off, as the service may change.
