Old houses, fields and orchards shape the village charm of Høsterkøb. At the same time, the village is considered worthy of preservation for its particular cultural and historical value. A conservation plan from 1966 preserved Høsterkøb as a village; the surrounding green spaces were protected. Cultural history and landscape thus offer two different perspectives on the place: its organically developed village character and the surroundings that frame it.
Village history and notable memorials
The church in Høsterkøb brings together several aspects of architectural and art history. Ulrik Adolph Plesner designed the building, while the decorations were made from drawings by Th. Bindesbøll. The Renaissance altarpiece also has its own history: it comes from the church in Birkerød. Those interested in historic churches will find information here about the design, decorations and an altarpiece transferred from another church.
Another local memorial stands at the intersection of Høsterkøbvej and Hørsholm Kongevej. There is a memorial stone to Princess Charlotte Amalie, who lived from 1706 to 1782.
Views and walking routes near Åsebakken
From the summit of Åsebakken, the view extends over Sjælsø and the surrounding landscape. Tables and benches at the rest area there provide a place to enjoy the view. This describes a specific spot for a break with a view, while the walking routes offer different destinations and distances.
An approximately 2 km walking route leads from Åsebakken to Jægerhytten in Eskemose Skov. A marked route of about 8 km leads from Åsebakken into Rude Skov and past Maglebjerg. These details help you choose based on distance and destination: the shorter route leads to a named hut, while the longer one goes into the forest and past a named ridge. So the choice depends not only on the distance but also on the destination and the landscape described.
KulturSlangen takes a different approach, combining nature, art and history. It passes through Høje Sandbjerg to Høsterkøb and Birkerød. Alongside the individual walking routes near Åsebakken, there is therefore also a route with a thematic focus and several named places. A prominent terminal moraine ridge shapes the northern part of Rude Skov and Høsterkøb. Among the largest and most striking terminal moraines in Rudersdal Municipality are Maglebjerg, Åsebakken and Højbjerg in Rude Skov, as well as Skolebakken in Høsterkøb. The names distinguish the landscape features in the forest from Skolebakken, which is in Høsterkøb.
Pilgrimage and religious tradition
The pilgrimage to Vor Frue af Aasebakken brings congregations from across eastern Denmark together for communal prayer and an open-air Mass. It takes place in spring, typically in May. If you want to plan your trip around this event, check the exact date before making arrangements. Vor Frue Monastery is another religious landmark: a branch of the Benedictine Order is located there.
Høsterkøb offers different themes to shape your trip: village history and church art, views and walking routes, or a seasonal religious tradition. The route information gives specific destinations and approximate distances; the pilgrimage takes place at a typical time in spring. You can take these different aspects into account when choosing your destination.
