In Birkerød, the cultural spectrum ranges from a Bronze Age stone with carved cup marks to art in various locations. Lakes and Høbjerg add distinctive features to the landscape. You can therefore choose different focuses for your stay: exhibitions, traces of art and history, or outdoor activities.
Arrive and Experience the Culture
The buildings of Mantzius now house the cultural centre and the Mantzius Live venue. Local history also includes Johan Mantzius: in 1868, together with his wife Elisabeth, he founded a small boarding school in Birkerød.
Birkerød railway station is a useful landmark when travelling to Mantzius. It is about a three-minute walk from there. The station is served by S-train line A and several bus routes, including route 500S.
The artworks in Birkerød also take different forms and occupy different settings. Egon Fischer’s sculpture “Skulpturbro” was created around 1980 and is part of Birkerød Library. “Nordfuglene” by Thorvald Odgaard stands in a small grove near the town hall and library. “Den Grønne Pæl” by Jørgen Haugen Sørensen is located in the garden of Birkerød Gl. Præstegård.
Art exhibitions have been held at Birkerød Gl. Præstegård since 1996, throughout the year except in July. For a different kind of cultural evening, Birkerød Bio hosts jazz nights in its cosy cinema lounge. As event programmes may change, check whether a jazz night is scheduled for your chosen dates.
Church History and Older Traces
The medieval frescoes in Birkerød Church were uncovered again in 1911. They probably date from the first half of the 14th century. Henrik Gerner’s chains hang on the wall inside the church, to the right of the entrance.
Selvmorderstenen, a Bronze Age stone with carved cup marks, lies in the garden of the vicarage in Birkerød. It was probably in place several hundred years before the wall surrounding the church and cemetery; later, it served as a so-called “Selvmordersten”. The tentative dating of the frescoes and the presumed history of the stone offer two different chronological points of reference for the local history.
Lakes, Park and Høbjerg
Birkerød Sø is close to the town centre and railway station. At Furesøen, there is a bathing spot by Birkerød Sejlklub. The two lakes thus offer different points of reference for planning: at Birkerød Sø, its location in town is key; at Furesøen, it is the bathing spot by the sailing club.
Cathrinelystparken has an activity area with exercise equipment. It is equipped for strength, balance, coordination, mobility and stretching exercises, as well as massage exercises. This offers a different kind of outdoor experience from visiting the art and history sites.
If you would like to include a hill in your outing, Høbjerg is a 68-metre-high viewpoint overlooking Birkerød. The Høbjergsti trail crosses the hill. Towards Ravnsnæsvej, the path becomes a flight of steps known locally as “Tusindtrapperne”.
The park at Hestkøbgård offers another kind of landscape. Hestkøbgård was first mentioned in 1370. The park features large old trees of various species, a hazel walk, an orchard and a small rose garden that has since been converted into a herb garden. Its garden features set this place apart from the artworks and historical traces found elsewhere in Birkerød.
