Kikhavn combines a historic village setting with a focus on the coast. For your planning, you can choose between a walk through the old fishing village, hikes through or past Kikhavn, and time at the beach. The coast and sea views are also part of the experience at Kikhavn Beach.
Fishing Village and Village Setting
The cultural environment encompasses old Kikhavn, with its buildings and street layout. The former connection between farming and fishing is particularly evident in the many large, thatched farmsteads and houses; together, both activities provided a good livelihood. The houses therefore represent not only a fishing village, but also illustrate how agriculture was part of the local livelihood. Kikhavn is documented in writing from 1561 and is the oldest fishing village on Halsnæs. As you explore on foot, you can experience the buildings and street layout as a cohesive cultural environment.
On Foot Through Kikhavn and Along the Trails
There is an important rule for visiting the narrow, winding lanes: motor traffic through Kikhavn is not permitted. Visitors should leave their cars in the car park outside the village and explore Kikhavn on foot. Plan to explore the village on foot. As local access rules may change, check the latest visitor information before travelling.
The Nordkyststien is a cycling and walking trail from Hundested to Helsingør and passes Kikhavn. An 8.5 km hike leads from the harbour in Hundested to Kikhavn. The routes give the village different roles: on the Nordkyststien, Kikhavn lies along the way between Hundested and Helsingør; on the hike from the harbour, Kikhavn is the destination. When planning, you can therefore choose based on the route: would you like Kikhavn to be a stop along a cycling and walking route, or would you prefer to plan a hike with the village as your destination?
One hike goes through Kikhavn and past the colourful, thatched fishermen’s houses. This means the village setting itself can be part of your route choice, rather than viewing Kikhavn only as a place along the way.
Coastal Scenery at Kikhavn Beach
Kikhavn Beach is located near one of Denmark’s best-preserved fishing villages and offers coastal scenery as well as sea views. It invites you to take walks along the coast and enjoy some relaxing time by the water. The beach is a distinct focus from a walk through the village: by the water, attention and views turn to the coast and sea; in the lanes, they turn to farmsteads, houses and street layout. You can shape your visit around your interests, focusing on the historic village setting, the coast, or both sides of Kikhavn.
