Tibirke’s history can be explored through the story of drifting sand and its historic trails. The Udsigten viewpoint and opportunities for birdwatching add to the views of the landscape. On the edge of the village, the Sandflugtsmonumentet stands on a distinctive slope; the Oldtidsvejen leads hikers along a route with archaeological traces of its own.
Sand Shaped the Landscape
Sand swallowed the villages of Torup and Tibirke. The original flat landscape of coastal meadows became a desert of large and small sand dunes. The Sandflugtsmonumentet was erected in 1738 to commemorate the efforts to combat drifting sand. Its location on the slope and its historical purpose provide a tangible point of reference for the story of the landscape.
Oldtidsvejen: Hiking and Road Construction
The hike along the Oldtidsvejen is about 3 kilometres in total and passes through gently hilly, soft terrain. When planning, take account of both the approximate total distance and the character of the trail. The parking area for the hike is by Tibirke Kirke.
The trail itself also has an archaeological feature: the largest section of the Oldtidsvejen is a 3-metre-wide road for wheeled vehicles, bordered by kerbstones and paved with fieldstones. This means the route combines a hike with a visible detail of its construction. The information about distance and terrain describes something different from the road’s dimensions and materials: one concerns the length and character of the hike, the other the construction of a section.
Church and Views
Tibirke Kirke was probably built around 1120–1130 as a small Romanesque fieldstone church. Together with the monument from 1738, these are two distinct historical points of reference in the village: the early church building and the later commemoration of the efforts to combat drifting sand.
At 57 metres above sea level, Udsigten is the highest point in the Tibirke Bakker and offers views of the surrounding landscape. The viewpoint complements the traces of buildings and roads with a far-reaching panorama. If you are choosing between the sights, their focus differs considerably: here, the landscape takes centre stage; at the Oldtidsvejen, it is the route and its construction details.
Birdlife and Traces in Ellemosen
Tisvilde Hegn borders Tibirke. Almost the entire area is designated as a habitat site, with part of it additionally designated as a bird protection area. A path leads from Tibirke to Holløse Bredning. There, the Danish Nature Agency (Naturstyrelsen) has set up a birdwatching hide in an old pumping station, where you can observe the birdlife. This brings together two different perspectives on nature: the view of the surrounding landscape from Udsigten and birdwatching at Holløse Bredning.
Ellemosen also connects a place to visit today with a discovery from the distant past. At the foot of the Tibirke Bakker, a roughly 150-metre-long, approximately 4,800-year-old pile bridge was found there in the 1940s. Today, you can walk out across Ellemosen and see where the old bridge once stood. The bridge is part of the area’s history; for visitors, the site of its former location is the point of reference.
