Kašava brings together hiking trails, viewpoints, a natural monument and a long church history. The village lies in the deep valley of the Dřevnice and within the Hostýnské vrchy Nature Park. This offers different ways to shape your stay: an educational trail, nature or cultural history.
Valley, Nature and Viewpoints
From Vrzavé skály, you can look southwest towards the Vizovické vrchy, the waters of the Slušovická přehrada reservoir and the Kašava valley. Another viewpoint is the upland meadow near Vinohrádek: from there, you can see the Vizovické vrchy and the summit of Doubrava, with its television transmitter and observation tower.
The Nad Kašavou Natural Monument is located in the cadastral area of Kašava. It protects the habitat of a mesic meadow dominated by tall oat-grass. Rare plants and animals such as the sand lizard, red-backed shrike and golden oriole are found in the area. These nature-related features complement the viewpoints with a closer look at the protected habitat and its species.
Educational Trail and Stations of the Cross
The Naučná stezka Kašava educational trail is 17.5 kilometres long. It has eleven stations, two benches and 32 signposts. Its topics range from local history, the parish and the school to traditions, folklore, customs and motorsport. They also include the vanished settlement of Janůvky and the crash of an American bomber in 1944; nature, springs and viewpoints are among the other topics. The trail also passes by a pond.
The Stations of the Cross climb towards Vinohrádek above Kašava and are lined with 14 traditional biblical stations. The route follows a yellow hiking trail marker and comes close to the educational trail’s second station near Vinohrádek. A descent through the forest of Vrzavé skály passes the Liduška spring and continues towards Kašava.
Church and Local History
The Church of St Catherine (“kostel sv. Kateřiny”) in Kašava is a protected cultural monument and a Baroque building dating from before the mid-18th century. The land registers for 1480 attest to the existence of the church and its right of patronage; Saint Catherine was chosen as its patron saint.
A hiking trail through Kašava passes the Chapel of the Virgin Mary, Queen, at Vinohrádek. There is also a monument to fallen American airmen along a hiking trail. Along with the church and Stations of the Cross, a chapel and a memorial site are therefore among the cultural history features to explore during your stay.
Getting There and Finding Accommodation
Kašava is accessible by IDZK bus routes 140, 141 and 443. Check the current timetable and route numbers before travelling, as timetables and numbering may change.
When looking for a hotel or other accommodation, your preferred focus can be a good place to start: would you like the educational trail and its landscape and local history themes to take centre stage, or would you prefer to focus mainly on the church, Stations of the Cross and other cultural sights?
