In Rosenau (Rožnov pod Radhoštěm), insights into Wallachian building and everyday life come together with practical options for an outing on foot or by bike. The open-air museum, the architecture of the observation tower and the Hradisko nature trail each offer a different focus. To plan your stay, it’s worth deciding first whether you’d like to set aside more time for culture, a longer outdoor route or additional leisure activities.
Timber buildings and everyday life in Wallachia
Dřevěné městečko opened to the public in 1925. Its historic square features original timber buildings, most of which were moved here from Rožnov’s market square and the surrounding area. You can allow about 50 minutes for a visit, which can be done independently or with a guide. This makes this part of the open-air museum an easy cultural stop to fit into your stay.
Valašská dědina focuses on everyday life in a Wallachian village: the period depicted spans from the late 18th century to the 1950s. Most of the buildings are originals moved here from their original locations. An entertaining search activity and themed materials on domestic production and traditional crafts add to the visit. This means the focus is not only on the buildings, but also on activities and crafts.
Mlýnská dolina explores the interplay between water and human labour. The open-air complex includes working buildings and facilities powered by mountain water and operated by people. Visitors can see a working water mill, a sawmill and a fulling mill; at the forge, they can observe how a blacksmith worked. Those especially interested in traditional working methods will find a different experience here than in the village ensembles.
Observation tower and outdoor trails
Jurkovičova rozhledna on Karlův kopec was built in 2012 based on drawings more than 100 years old. Stone and traditionally worked and carved wood define its architecture. The tower is 31.09 metres tall, and the viewing platform is 18.8 metres above the ground. From the parking area at Valašské muzeum v přírodě, it takes about 30 minutes on foot to reach the tower via a wooden footbridge and the green-marked hiking trail.
The Hradisko nature trail is a longer hiking option. The circular route is 3 kilometres long, takes about 2 hours and has an elevation gain of 160 metres. Nine stops follow the route through an area of ecological significance within the CHKO Beskydy. The trail leads to the summit of Hradisko, where the ruins of a castle stand. It is marked with the nature trail symbol: a white square with a green stripe.
The time estimates provide a useful comparison for planning your day: allow about 50 minutes for Dřevěné městečko and around two hours for the Hradisko nature trail. These are different types of visits and routes; the estimates do not describe a shared route. For the observation tower route, the approximate walking time from the specified parking area is another useful reference point.
Cycling and other activities
The Bečva cycle path runs from Valašské Meziříčí onwards to Rožnov pod Radhoštěm. Much of the cycle path follows newly built sections that are closed to motor traffic. This offers a different way to include Rosenau in a cycling trip than the hiking trails around Hradisko.
Golf and wellness are also available locally. Valašský golfový klub has a public 9-hole course that can be used without a green card. The course also features a spacious driving range with three covered tees, as well as a putting green and a chipping green. Rožnov Beer Spa offers hot baths with dark beer, peat and sulphur baths in Victorian copper tubs or wooden barrels, as well as herbal aromatherapy and massages.
UNIPAR in Rosenau offers an excursion to see candle production. Depending on the season, Rožnovský pivovar arranges guided tours of the original cellars and brewhouse for larger groups. The tours include explanations of the brewing process and tastings from the lager cellars; group booking is required for this format.
Wallachian cuisine and planning your stay
Visitors can sample traditional Wallachian dishes in the Valašská dědina area. These include kyselica, halušky, frgály and bramboráky. The dishes add a culinary perspective to the insight into village life. Together with the search activity, the craft materials and the historic buildings, they create a varied cultural focus, though not all the activities take the same amount of time.
For a stay in Rosenau, you can use the approximate durations of the museum visit and the nature trail as two distinct planning guides. Depending on your interests, add the tower route, cycling, golf or wellness. Larger groups should remember that the seasonal brewery tour requires booking.
