Vápenice brings together a history of settlement, regional music traditions and nearby nature destinations. The village was established before 1740 as a Kopaničář settlement belonging to Starý Hrozenkov. When planning your trip, you can choose from a range of highlights: customs throughout the year, the Okolo Hrozenka educational trail and protected landscapes; nearby options also include skiing and cycling.

Music and customs in Vápenice

The men’s choir from Vápenice draws on the tradition of Hude music and on a folklore group that was once active in Vápenice. Its repertoire consists mainly of songs from the Kopanice. At church consecration celebrations, the choir performs at the bell towers in Vápenice and Žítková. Regional songs and public festive traditions thus go hand in hand.

Recurring customs are also part of the annual calendar: a maypole is traditionally erected in April. In September, the Kopaničář village of Vápenice celebrates its church consecration; a mass is then held at the bell. If you would like to plan your trip around one of these occasions, check the specific event dates in advance.

The Okolo Hrozenka educational trail

“Okolo Hrozenka” is a 20-kilometre, moderately difficult educational trail for walkers. Eight information panels offer insights into the life and culture of the Moravian Kopanice, past and present. The trail combines physical activity with a regional cultural theme that also resonates in Vápenice’s musical tradition.

The educational trail passes through the surroundings of Starý Hrozenkov, Žítková, Vyškovec and Vápenice. Its length, moderate difficulty and the topics covered by the panels provide useful information if you are looking for a hike with a cultural focus. The places named describe the areas through which the trail passes, not a guarantee that it goes through their town centres.

Protected nature nearby

Mravenčí louka (Rubaniska) is a 15.3-hectare protected area near Vápenice. It includes original pastures, overgrown field margins, and scattered groups of shrubs and trees. Endangered plant species grow there, including several orchids and other rare plants. The area therefore combines a variety of landscape features with distinctive plant life.

The nearby V Krátkých protected area offers a different natural environment: it includes flower-rich orchid meadows, wet meadows and two ponds. These ponds are an important habitat for amphibians and aquatic insects, especially dragonflies. In contrast with the pastures and field margins at Mravenčí louka, wetlands and water features are the focus here.

Winter sports and cycling route

The popular ski area on nearby Mikulčin Vrch has several downhill runs and lifts. The Lopata slope near Vápenice is suitable for beginners and more advanced skiers. As winter operating conditions can change, it is advisable to check the latest information before making plans.

Cycling Route 46 also passes through the surroundings of Vápenice via Mikulčin Vrch. Route network details may change, so check the current route if you plan to include it in your trip.
