Zborovice offers several distinct points of interest for visitors: St. Bartholomew’s Church, two castle buildings, the Friess family crypt and a walk to the crypt. The village also has a historic amateur theatre tradition, recurring events and a rail connection with two stops. If you are looking for a holiday apartment in Zborovice, you can choose the village based on whether local history and a particular walk suit your travel plans. Each of these topics offers a different focus for planning your trip.

Church, Castle and Local History

St. Bartholomew’s Church stands on the site of a former cemetery. Its cruciform floor plan and solid vaulting are distinctive architectural features. The statues of Saint Florian and Saint John of Nepomuk are also part of the church’s history: both were moved there. This site thus brings together the area’s former use, a distinctive architectural design and the stories of two saints.

The chronology of the castle buildings is noteworthy. An earlier fortress was converted into a Baroque castle in the early 18th century. Beside it stands the New Castle, a two-storey villa in the Neo-Renaissance style. The Vienna architects Helmer and Fellner built it next to the castle in 1891. The two buildings therefore represent different chapters in the history of architecture: the conversion of the fortress and the later construction of the villa.

The Friess family crypt adds a connection to Zborovice’s former owners to this historical setting. It stands at the highest point of the castle garden. Together with the castle buildings, it makes the history of the Friess family a distinct aspect of the village’s history.

The amateur theatre tradition also has a specific historical beginning: amateur theatre in Zborovice began in 1895 as the theatre section of Sokol. Alongside architectural history and former ownership, local cultural history is another way to discover Zborovice.

Walks and Landscape

The walk to the crypt leads to Zborovice and is considered suitable for hikers, families with children and cyclists. The route follows field and stony paths. If you plan to take it, you can take these two types of terrain into account when choosing and preparing for your route; no particular walking pace is implied.

A pond with benches is part of Zborovice’s castle park. This is a distinct feature of the park, separate from the walk, where the condition of the route is the main consideration. The landscape features are therefore different: the park with its pond and seating, and the route to the crypt over fields and stony terrain.

The local Hejtmanka spring is another point of connection with nature. Since 2021, the KČT Zborovice local group has looked after the spring. It cleans it several times a year, mows the grass and carries out necessary repairs. The KČT local group also contributes to the local hiking and excursion culture by preparing routes, trips and journeys to places of tourist interest in the Czech Republic and Slovakia.

Events and Getting There

Zborovice traditionally holds a ball, a children’s carnival and a ceremonial Christmas tree lighting. These events differ in character and may be a factor when choosing when to travel. If you would like to plan your stay around one of the events, check the specific dates in advance.

There are two stops to consider when planning rail travel. Zborovice railway station is the terminus of a 17-kilometre branch line from Kroměříž. In addition, the Zborovice-zastávka stop in the lower part of the village has been available to passengers for several years. Check current train times before travelling, as transport information can change.
