The Church of Saint Anthony of Padua is at the heart of Míškovice’s cultural heritage: it was built between 1922 and 1927 and consecrated in 1928. Chapels, memorials at the cemetery and archaeological evidence add to the cultural offerings, while the Potoky pond complex provides a distinctive landscape feature. Architecture, local religious history and the natural environment thus stand alongside one another as distinct themes.

Church of Saint Anthony: Architecture and Interior

The Church of Saint Anthony of Padua was built to a design by František Lydie Gahura, an architect from Zlín. Construction took place between 1922 and 1927; as a Constructivist building dating from 1927, it is significant to the history of modern architecture. The church is listed in the central Czech register of immovable cultural monuments. Its furnishings include an altar window depicting Saint Anthony and a Stations of the Cross with high reliefs. It was consecrated on 29 June 1928, after construction was complete. Its architecture, architectural classification and furnishings offer culture-minded travellers several distinct points of interest.

Chapels and Memorials in the Village

The late Baroque Chapel of Saint Florian dates from the late 18th century and is listed as an immovable cultural monument. It stands next to the cemetery, at the crossroads of the roads to Mysločovice and Machová. The cemetery was established in 1928 to a design by František Lydie Gahura. The memorial to the victims of the First World War stands in front of its entrance gate. Other stone memorials are located at different points: the statue of Saint Joseph, dating from 1895, stands in the village square. The Lourdes Madonna dates from 1891 and is located south of the cemetery, on the road to Mysločovice. The village’s history is therefore spread across the cemetery area and the village square, rather than being confined to a single building.

Traces of Earlier Eras

Křemenná near Míškovice is a significant archaeological site dating from the Old Stone Age. A burial ground of the Nitra culture, dating from the beginning of the Bronze Age, was also discovered there. The two periods mark distinct phases of early history: here, the Old Stone Age is followed by evidence from the early Bronze Age. This means the historical span reaches much further back than the construction history of the church and cemetery.

Ponds, Wildlife Habitat and Cycle Route

Two distinct connections with nature complement the architectural heritage. The Potoky pond complex lies between Míškovice and Machová, outside the built-up centre of the village. Together with the surrounding copses, it forms a biocorridor and provides a habitat for many animals. The Kurovický lom natural monument is in the area around Kurovice, Tlumačov, Míškovice and Machová. Cycle route No. 5271 passes by the nearby quarry; bicycle racks are available at the entrance. As the route and bicycle racks may change, check the latest local information before setting out. Potoky is known for its ponds, copses and wildlife habitat; at Kurovický lom, a natural monument and a cycle route come together.

Clubs and Exhibitions

The local small-animal breeders’ club holds small-animal exhibitions every year at the end of summer. The Czech Gardening Association holds an exhibition of fruit, vegetables and flowers in Míškovice. If either exhibition is important to your travel plans, check the exact date in advance.
