Hulín combines a medieval landmark with nature in the surrounding area and seasonal cultural offerings. At the Church of St. Wenceslas, the Romanesque building and portal take center stage; in Záhlinické rybníky Nature Park, old oaks, ponds and birdlife shape the landscape. The area also hosts an annual festival celebrated on September 28, as well as summer events. To plan your visit, you can first decide which of these highlights you want to shape your stay.

Romanesque architectural history and medieval Hulín

The first written mention of the existence of the town of Hulín dates from 1224, when the King of Bohemia, Přemysl Otakar I, came to Hulín. The Church of St. Wenceslas was founded around the first quarter of the 13th century. Originally, it was a single-nave Romanesque building with an apse. The town’s history thus offers a tangible connection to medieval architecture.

The Romanesque portal dates from the first half of the 13th century. It is considered the most significant and valuable surviving element of the remains of the Romanesque church building. For culture enthusiasts, the portal brings together the early date and heritage value in a single architectural detail; the single-nave building with an apse places it in the context of the church’s original form.

The history of the administrative center also forms part of Hulín’s medieval character. Around the 1290s, under Dětřich, Bruno’s representative, it underwent extensive redevelopment: the fortress was turned into a castle, and ramparts and a moat fortified the entire complex. This period adds the administrative and fortification developments of the time to the town’s early history.

Woodland, ponds and birdlife

In the area surrounding Hulín, Zámeček Forest and the adjoining ponds are part of Záhlinické rybníky Nature Park. The forest is home to large old oak trees. The nature park is home to as many as 270 bird species, including year-round nesting birds and migratory birds. Nature enthusiasts can focus both on the old trees as distinctive landscape features and on the variety of birdlife. This gives the nature park a different theme from the Romanesque architecture: here, woodland, water and wildlife define the landscape.

Festivals and summer activities

The traditional Svatováclavské hody festival takes place in Hulín every year on September 28. For the September 2026 edition, a traditional fair was scheduled at Hulín swimming pool from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The recurring festival date is a useful reference point for planning your trip; if you are traveling specifically for an event, check the dates for the relevant year.

In summer, the open-air cinema in Mezivodí Park screens films of various genres. The Městské kulturní centrum Hulín also organizes the traditional Hulínské hudební léto in summer. These two activities give the summer program a film and music focus. At Hulín swimming pool, all sports facilities and attractions are included in the admission price. Sports activities thus complement the town’s historical and natural attractions.

Plan your journey and choose your highlights

Hulín railway station is on lines 303 Kojetín–Valašské Meziříčí and 330 Přerov–Břeclav. Záhlinické rybníky Nature Park in the surrounding area can be reached by bicycle, train, car or bus. These details help with different aspects of planning: the railway lines indicate the station’s location, while the listed modes of transport describe how to reach the nature park. Check schedules and local directions for your travel date.

The recurring and seasonal activities make it easy to distinguish between different times to visit: Svatováclavské hody is held on September 28, while the cinema and music program take place in summer. The church, woodland and ponds offer other points of interest. You can choose Hulín according to whether you would like to focus your stay on medieval architectural history, nature or a seasonal cultural event.
