Velká Bíteš offers several distinct points of interest for planning a trip: the High Gothic church fortress, the architectural history of the town hall and the collections of the town museum. An educational trail adds former mills to these themes. This lets you choose between architecture, historical objects in collections and a route focused on mills.

Church Fortress and Oldest Part of Town

The Church Fortress of St. John the Baptist is an exceptional High Gothic monument. It is surrounded by a continuous stone wall, and loopholes are still preserved in the bastions. The combination of a church and a defensive enclosure makes the complex’s defensive character clear.

The oldest part of Velká Bíteš has been a protected heritage site since 1958 and is laid out as a long, spacious square lined with townhouses. Here, the shape of the square and its houses define the historic urban space. This distinguishes the area from the church fortress, whose wall and bastions define its appearance: in Velká Bíteš, both an individual monument and the layout of an entire part of town are in view.

Town Hall: Two Important Dates

The town hall’s history can be distinguished by two dates. It has been documented at its present location since 1480. In 1886, the town hall acquired its present appearance: a new Neo-Renaissance-style building was erected on the original cellars, based on a design by architect Mór Kallina. The dates describe different aspects—the documented location on the one hand, and the present architectural form on the other. When considering the history of the town hall, bear this distinction in time in mind.

Town Museum: Rocks and Older Collection Items

The town museum complements the architectural history with mineralogical and historical themes. Its mineral and rock exhibition also features examples from the latest finds; the specific items on display may change. The oldest objects in the collection include individual medieval objects and archaeological finds. The town museum thus brings together different subjects: the study of minerals and rocks, and a look at older historical and archaeological collection items.

Mill Educational Trail and Cycling Route

The “Už ty mlýny doklapaly” educational trail passes nine former mills near Vlkov, Křoví and Velká Bíteš. There are two circular routes, 19 kilometres in total. This distance applies to both circular routes combined. When planning, take note of the information about the condition of some trail markers. The trail’s focus differs from that of the church fortress, town hall and museum: here, the former mills and circular routes are at the centre.

Cycling Route 5235 connects Velká Bíteš with Zvole near Bystřice nad Pernštejnem. Check its specific alignment against current cycling maps before setting off. The educational trail and cycling route offer different approaches to planning: the educational trail focuses on mills, circular routes and their combined total distance, while Route 5235 starts with the places it connects. You can choose according to your interest in local history, museum collections or a cycling connection without treating the two routes as the same.
