Stránecká Zhoř brings together three distinct cultural themes: the history of the castle, the Chapel of Saint Bernard of Clairvaux, and the so-called Černá kuchyně (Black Kitchen). Here, a Renaissance building with an earlier predecessor, a chapel newly built in the spirit of traditional construction with a historic vault, and a reconstructed kitchen with culinary demonstrations come together. The result is a clear focus on architectural history and culinary tradition. When looking for a holiday apartment, you can decide whether these themes themselves or specific tour and event dates will shape your stay.
Castle: Two Building Phases
The Renaissance castle was built in the second half of the 16th century on the site of a Gothic fortress dating from the second half of the 14th century. The two dates refer to different building phases: the fortress was the earlier predecessor, while the castle was the later Renaissance building on the same site. Around two centuries separate these phases; the castle’s history can thus be understood as a succession of an earlier structure and a later Renaissance building.
As part of the municipality’s 2026 anniversary celebrations, a guided castle tour was held during the open day; a fourth guided tour was announced for August 7, 2026. If a tour is important to your trip, check the dates for your preferred period before choosing your accommodation.
The Chapel: Reconstruction and an Older Vault
The Chapel of Saint Bernard of Clairvaux in the former castle was newly built between 2004 and 2019 in the spirit of traditional construction; work on the interior may still be ongoing. At the same time, it incorporates a former vault dating from the second half of the 16th century. The chapel therefore brings together a much later reconstruction and an older architectural element. For architecture enthusiasts, this contrast adds to the castle’s history, tracing it from the earlier fortress through the Renaissance building to a more recent chapter in its architectural history.
Holy Mass is celebrated regularly in the chapel. Since service times may change, check the current schedule if you would like to combine your visit with a service.
Černá kuchyně (Black Kitchen): Access and Culinary Events
The restored so-called Černá kuchyně is accessible from the castle courtyard; opening arrangements may vary. When it is operating, cooking, baking and roasting may take place there over an open fire. These activities by the fire are therefore subject to the kitchen being in operation. Check before your visit whether access is available on your chosen date.
Since 2014, culinary events featuring demonstrations based on historical recipes have been held regularly in the Černá kuchyně. The kitchen is therefore not only a part of the architectural history: the demonstrations also bring historical cooking methods to the fore. Check the dates of individual events before your trip if you plan to attend a demonstration.
Plan Your Stay Around Your Interests
When choosing a holiday apartment, there is a practical distinction between architectural history and scheduled events: the castle and chapel are the main cultural and historical attractions, while tours, services and kitchen events take place on specific dates. If a tour or demonstration will determine your plans, first confirm a suitable date and then arrange your travel dates accordingly. This will help you find a holiday apartment in Stránecká Zhoř for the period that best suits your interests.
