A village green as a historic focal point
Rousměrov preserves a historic settlement layout in which buildings form a circle around the village green. This arrangement gives the village a distinct spatial pattern. For travellers interested in historic village layouts, the village green itself is not the only point of interest; its relationship to the surrounding buildings is also relevant. The circular enclosure is the defining feature of the settlement’s layout. The overall arrangement and individual houses can be read on two levels: the circular enclosure describes how the buildings relate to the green, while the orientation of the gables shows whether a house faces the green or the street.
Another detail is visible in the house gables: some face the village green, while others face the street. These two orientations establish different reference points for the buildings. As you look around, notice which gable faces the green and which is oriented towards the street. This makes it possible to compare the overall layout with a specific architectural feature.
Pond chain and commemorative trees
Water is also part of the village’s character. Watercourses that flow through or originate in the cadastral area of Rousměrov feed a chain of three ponds within the settlement: Zvonička, Návesník and Chalupník. The pond chain links several bodies of water into a landscape feature. Alongside the built form of the village green, it highlights another aspect of the village: the connection between watercourses and ponds.
Southwest of Rousměrov, four large-leaved lime trees were designated commemorative trees in 1996. The compass direction indicates their location relative to the village, while the year marks their designation. Unlike the pond chain, the focus here is on a particular group of trees and their designation. Nature and remembrance thus come together in different ways.
Building history in Laštovičky
The Chapel of the Virgin Mary (zvonička P. Marie) in Laštovičky is a distinctive small structure from the 19th century, whose location and form give it its particular character. Here, the focus is on a single structure. Also in Laštovičky, the medieval and early modern settlement core is designated as an archaeological area; finds have been documented or are reasonably presumed to exist. Two scales therefore sit side by side: the form of a building and the historical classification of a settlement core. The historical perspective extends from the medieval and early modern settlement core, through the 19th-century structure, to the designation of the lime trees in 1996.
