Světnov combines the protected Světnovské údolí with a local history dating back to the Middle Ages. The Žďárské vrchy Protected Landscape Area shapes the setting; in the valley, distinctive meadow communities and meandering watercourses meet traces of human history. When planning your visit, it is worth treating seasonal nature viewing and historical landmarks as separate highlights.

Valley nature in spring

Světnovské údolí is protected as a natural monument. Its preserved features include significant meadow communities and meandering watercourses with numerous protected plant and animal species. In spring, protected snowdrops cover the banks. If you mainly want to see the flowers, the period around late March and early April is best. The flowering time may shift depending on the weather, so conditions are relevant when planning your trip.

The routes also offer different ways to experience the area. A hike follows a forest path along the Sklenský potok into the valley. A cycling trip from Zámek Žďár leads to the Světnovské údolí nature reserve. To choose between them, consider the differences described: the hike focuses on the forest path and the course of the stream, while the cycling trip starts at the castle and has the valley as its destination.

A place with a long history

Světnov was founded before 1293 through the colonization efforts of the Žďár monastery. The first written mention dates from 1366. The founding and the first mention therefore mark two different stages in the village’s history. Another biographical trace leads to 1581, when Prokop Paeonius was born in Světnov. He was a poet, writer and professor at the medical faculty of Charles University.

Several surviving landmarks bring different eras in the village to life. The stone road bridge over the Stržský potok was built in 1847 to replace an older wooden bridge and is a cultural monument. A stone cross dating from 1848 stands in the northern part of Světnov. To the south, a wayside shrine dating from 1719 stands beside the old road. A chapel replaced the old wooden bell tower in 1854. After the First World War, two memorials to the fallen were erected in Světnov. Together, these structures and memorials represent different layers of history, without belonging to a single historical event.

The Křížový kámen in the valley

The Křížový kámen is located on an old path in the forests of Světnovské údolí. It is a sandstone with a carved cross whose ends are trefoil-shaped. Its traditional interpretation also remains tentative: the stone probably commemorates the death of a Russian officer as troops returned through the Bohemian lands after the Napoleonic Wars. The site thus combines a visible stone carving with a possible historical memory, which should not be treated as a confirmed explanation.

Check bus connections before your trip

A municipal development document for 2020–2030 mentions public bus services in Světnov within the integrated transport system of ZDAR, a.s., and ARRIVA VÝCHODNÍ ČECHY a.s. Check the current operators and timetables before travelling. This lets you plan your bus journey separately, while the valley visit, seasonal flowering and historical landmarks each retain their own focus.
