A mighty late Gothic tower beside a Neo-Romanesque nave gives Volevčice a tangible architectural history to explore. Archaeological traces of a medieval settlement can also be found in the municipality, while saline clay near Velká Volavka shapes the plant life. If you are looking for a holiday apartment, these different themes can help you decide what to focus on during your stay: architecture, local history or landscape.
The church brings together several building phases
The single-nave Church of Saint Procopius was built in 1840 on the site of a Gothic church dedicated to Saint Gallus. The mighty late Gothic tower was preserved; the Neo-Romanesque nave and presbytery were added to it asymmetrically in 1840. The building thus combines an older tower with a 19th-century church. The church has been a listed monument since 7 October 2021. For architecture enthusiasts, its distinctive feature is this combination: the church is defined not by a uniform new structure, but by a preserved late Gothic section and a Neo-Romanesque extension.
Written records and archaeological traces
The first written mention of Volevčice dates from 1333. Around the middle of the 13th century, an archaeologically documented medieval settlement was established southwest of the present-day municipality, but still within its boundaries. It was later abandoned and buried beneath a layer of silt about 70 centimetres thick. The local history therefore has two distinct points of reference: the written mention of the village and the archaeological evidence of a settlement. The year 1333 marks the first written mention, not the beginning of settlement in the municipality.
Salt-influenced plant life and rural history
Velká Volavka, an important site for halophilic flora, is located near Volevčice. It is the only surviving site of sea plantain (Plantago maritima) in the Most District. At the foot of Velká Volavka, the salinisation of the clay causes plants to become dwarfed. This makes the natural interest specific to a particular location and soil condition. For comparing your interests, this topic is clearly distinct from the church’s architectural history: here, the focus is on plants and their habitat.
The more recent history of the landscape also offers a distinct insight into the character of the village. Although brown coal mining developed nearby in the 19th century, Volevčice remained an agricultural village. The coexistence of mining in the surrounding area and continued agriculture is part of the village’s historical context.
Seasonal activities and getting there
In summer, the local ice rink is used as a football, nohejbal and volleyball court. This seasonal recreational use adds another focus alongside the historical and landscape themes, without assuming that the facility is used all year round.
The dates matter when planning your journey: from 16 March to 31 October 2026, bus route 545 will not run because the bridge between Volevčice and Bečov is completely closed. The municipality provides separate links to ČD train timetables and bus timetables. Check the timetables for your travel date and take the stated suspension of the bus route into account.
Find a holiday apartment based on your travel dates and interests
When looking for a holiday apartment, you can match your travel dates to your interests: using the ice rink as a sports court is specifically a summer activity, while the church, local history and plant life offer other points of interest. The temporary suspension of bus route 545 is also a practical planning factor for travel during the specified period in 2026.
