Litvínov’s architectural history spans the early Baroque Church of the Archangel Michael, the Baroque Zámek Valdštejnů, Art Nouveau buildings and Koldům, a technical and architectural monument of European significance. Exhibitions, event venues and sports facilities add to this picture of the city. You can tailor your stay to different interests: historic architecture, cultural events or physical activity each offer a distinct way to experience Litvínov.

Church and castle: two architectural histories

The early Baroque Church of the Archangel Michael was built between 1685 and 1694 to designs by J. B. Mathey. It is a prominent landmark in the historic part of Litvínov. The complex includes the rectory at No. 38, a staircase leading from the square to the church’s main entrance, and a statue of Saint John of Nepomuk in the rectory courtyard. The staircase, rectory and statue add clearly defined features to the church building; together, the ensemble can be seen as more than just the church itself.

The Voigtovy sady gardens adjoin the rear of the church. This direct connection between the church building and the green space adds a second, clearly defined location to the view of the historic building. Those interested in the history of the area can thus consider the church and the adjoining grounds together.

Zámek Valdštejnů is located at No. 1 Mostecká ulice, near Míru Square. Its present-day Baroque appearance dates from a renovation carried out between 1732 and 1743, shaped by the architect František Maxmilián Kaňka. Compared with the church, built earlier, it represents a later phase in Litvínov’s architectural history. Zámek Valdštejnů hosts exhibitions on sculptures by Stanislav Hanzík, Litvínov’s count’s cloth manufactory, and the history of Hush toy manufacturing in Litvínov. Exhibitions may change; check in advance which topics are currently on display.

Art Nouveau, a monument and leisure

Another period is represented by five recently renovated Art Nouveau houses on Smetanova ulice, built between 1901 and 1906. Comparing them with the early Baroque church and the Baroque castle highlights the range of architectural periods without suggesting that the buildings are alike. Koldům adds another dimension as a technical and architectural monument of European significance.

The publicly accessible sports and recreation complex around Koldům includes a multipurpose sports hall, a public outdoor swimming pool, and tennis and volleyball courts. Koupaliště Litvínov has a 50-metre outdoor pool with a waterslide. Sand and grass playing areas can be used for volleyball, handball, football or dodgeball. So, alongside visiting architectural landmarks, there are practical options for sports and leisure. Facilities and the sports available at Koupaliště may change; if you plan to use a particular area, check the current offerings in advance.

The cultural venues also differ in their programmes. Citadela Litvínov offers film screenings, a film club, concerts and other events. The Loučky cultural and sports complex has a small and a large open-air stage for concerts. This distinction is useful when planning: Citadela’s programme includes films as well as concerts, while Loučky has two open-air stages for concerts. Individual events may change, so check the dates of the events that interest you in advance.
