Discover Šluknov with a clear focus on cultural history and hiking. Local trails, the Židovský vrch viewpoint, and religious and Baroque buildings offer different starting points for planning. If you time your stay for the last weekend in June, you can also consider the Zámecké slavnosti; the individual programmes vary.

Hiking and views of the town

The Šluknovské stezky form a network of 63 km of signposted local hiking trails. They are primarily intended for hiking; most routes can also be used for mountain biking. When planning, it is important to understand the 63 km as the extent of the trail network, not the length of a single tour. So choose a specific route as the basis for planning your day. The guidance on use makes the priority clear: hiking is the main purpose, while mountain biking is also possible on most routes.

The Židovský vrch viewpoint lies on the northern edge of town, on the hill of the same name, which is 373 m high. From there, you can see the built-up area of Šluknov, the conservation area and the town’s monuments. The viewpoint therefore offers a view of the townscape and its protected areas. Tourist and cycling maps, tourist cards and badges, brochures, publications and souvenirs are available there. If these materials are important for finding your way, check what is currently available before your visit, as service information may change.

Religious buildings and historic traces

The Šluknov Stations of the Cross were laid out between 1738 and 1756. They comprise 14 stations, 12 niche chapels and two masonry chapels, and end at the summit of the hill, at the Calvary Chapel. The site makes a good focal point if you want to explore not just individual buildings, but a historically planned sequence of stations and chapels. The Křížový vrch complex is part of the Šluknov urban conservation area; the buildings of the Stations of the Cross are protected monuments.

On the Stezka sakrálními památkami, you will encounter crosses, chapels, sandstone statues and timber-framed houses in Šluknov. Its religious heritage thus encompasses a variety of architectural and artistic forms. The single-nave Baroque Church of St. Wenceslas offers another historical connection: it was built on the site of a 12th-century chapel and contains High Baroque statues. Many other Baroque sandstone statues can be seen around the town and along the approach roads.

Another historical trace leads to the Schweidrich silver mine near Šluknov. It was first mentioned as early as the 15th century. This mining history adds another dimension to the religious buildings and Baroque art, showing that not all aspects of the town’s history take the same form.

Šluknov Castle and its park

Šluknov Castle was built by Arnošt ze Šlejnic between 1566 and 1573. It is surrounded by a reconstructed English-style park. In contrast to the Stations of the Cross, the church and the sculptures, the castle provides another clearly defined historical focal point; the park complements it with a landscaped setting.

The Zámecké slavnosti take place every year on the last weekend in June, in the castle and its park. The individual programmes may vary. If your stay falls during this period, check the details of the programme for that year. This helps distinguish the annual event from the enduring architectural and landscape features that shape Šluknov’s cultural character.
