Lobendava lies near the German border in a picturesque valley by the Luční potok stream, in the Šluknovský výběžek. The village combines a prominent baroque church with Stations of the Cross, chapels and a hiking route to Severní. If you are looking for a destination with a history of religious architecture and specific route options, you will find both here—without this amounting to a fixed itinerary.
Baroque Architecture and Pilgrimage Sites
The baroque Church of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary is a defining feature of Lobendava. It was built between 1709 and 1712. After the fire of 1790, its baroque appearance was preserved during restoration. The construction period and rebuilding give the church a clear history that distinguishes it from the village’s other religious monuments.
On Anenský vrch, the Stations of the Cross consist of fourteen stations: thirteen are designed as niche chapels, and the fourteenth is the Chapel of the Holy Sepulchre. The pilgrimage complex also includes an enclosed Garden of Gethsemane with statues set into the landscape. The protected baroque Chapel of St. Anne on Annaberg was built from 1775 to 1777 to house a late Gothic statue of St. Anne.
The Chapel of St. Joachim also stands on a hill: it is located at the summit of the hill of the same name, about two kilometres northeast of Lobendava. Stations of the Cross surround the chapel; the complex was fully restored in 2017. The village also has a protected baroque statue of St. John of Nepomuk dating from 1746. It stands on a two-tiered triangular plinth with reliefs depicting episodes from the saint’s life, including his fall from the bridge, his torture and the queen’s confession. A protected baroque rectory with an adjoining farm building dating from the 18th century adds to the architectural heritage.
Another perspective on the architectural heritage can be found in the village district of Severní: there stands the protected Hilgersdorfský Mill, a neoclassical former mill complex dating from the early 19th century. These diverse examples range from religious art and chapels to a historic mill complex.
Historic Roads and Routes to Severní
Lobendava lies on the historic “Kaiserstraße,” also known as the “Dresdner Straße.” It was originally built as an important link between Vienna and Dresden. A branch of the historic road led to Dolní Poustevna and Sebnitz. This history of the road adds another perspective on the village’s connections to its religious buildings.
A hiking route starts in the village centre at a junction of the green and blue trails. From there, it follows the green trail two kilometres north to Severní. Trail conditions and markings may change; check both before setting out. A cycling route passes through Severní to Lobendava and continues to the Lobendava–Langburkersdorf border crossing. The two route descriptions have different emphases: the hiking route specifies a distance and direction, while the cycling route identifies the further border crossing as its destination.
Choosing Lobendava as a Place to Stay
If you are considering Lobendava as a place to stay, your travel priorities may help you decide: would you mainly like to explore its baroque and religious architectural history, or include one of the routes described? The cultural details and the different route options offer two tangible ways to approach your trip. Plan around the sights and routes that matter to you.
