Dolní Podluží lies on the northern side of the Lusatian Mountains, in a broad valley beside the Lužnička stream. The landscape extends beyond the village centre: around two kilometres to the south lies the deeply incised valley of the Milířka. The village description therefore encompasses both a broad valley and a neighbouring valley that is considerably more deeply incised.

Valleys and Geology

The Milířka valley lies between Rohál, Čertova pláň and Kozí hřbet. The Lusatian Fault runs through its central section. It forms the boundary between the Lusatian Granite Massif to the north and the sandstones of the Bohemian Cretaceous Basin to the south. This geological dividing line distinguishes the rock formations north and south of the valley and gives the landscape its specific character.

Church, Crypt and Memorial Sites

The masonry Church of St Catherine was completed in 1548. A prominent landmark, it is an important feature of the local landscape. Its history can be connected with other buildings and memorial sites in Dolní Podluží, although they do not all tell the same story: the church’s construction history takes centre stage, while other places commemorate specific people or events.

The crypt is a small funerary structure in a distinctive Neo-Gothic style. It was built in 1893–1894 for Paul Brass, the son of the owner of the local textile factory; the design is by the eminent Viennese architect Viktor Luntz. In 2020, the crypt was added to the list of cultural monuments. Details of its construction, patron and architecture give this small structure its own historical significance.

In the cemetery, a stone fountain structure also serves as a memorial to 101 residents of Podluží who died on the battlefields of the First World War. A wooden bell tower dating from the 18th century adds another building to the local history: it was restored in 2016 and received a new bell in 2018.

Cinema and Local Products

Film is another part of the village’s cultural life. The Bio Luž cinema is still in operation and screens films using Sony Digital Cinema 4K and RealD 3D. The building was constructed in 1928–1929 and extensively renovated in 1979 and 1985. This brings architectural history and an ongoing film programme together in one place. If you plan to visit the cinema, check the current programme in advance.

Another local feature is GALLI DISTILLERY, a family-run craft distillery that produces fruit spirits and liqueurs in Dolní Podluží. LUŽICKÁ BYLINNÁ, JABLKOVICE, HRUŠKOVICE and RŮŽENÍN have been awarded the regional brand certificate.

Border Crossing, Cycling Route and Mining

Dolní Podluží has a border crossing into Germany for pedestrians and cyclists; the village can be reached on foot and by bicycle from Großschönau. Check the crossing’s status before your trip. Separately, a cross-border cycling tour to timber-framed houses passes through Dolní Podluží. As route information can change, it is advisable to check the details before setting out.

There are several specific points of interest related to mining. The mining heritage trail lies in the Milířka valley, with its start and finish each about one kilometre from Uhlířská cesta. This road runs from Dolní Podluží to the saddle below Ptačinec.

Another named mining site is Štola U Knížecí studánky, also known as Antoniho štola. It is 208 metres long. Along with the heritage trail, it brings the mining history to life, while the valley’s geology, local history, cinema and regional products appeal to other interests.
