Plaveč stretches along both banks of the Jevišovka; a Romanesque rotunda is also part of the castle complex. The municipality thus brings together a river landscape and an architectural history spanning the Middle Ages and later additions. This gives you two distinct focuses when planning your trip: paths in the valley and a closer look at the rotunda, its bell and other historic details. The Lapikus area adds distinctive rocky and forest habitats to the mix. The bathing beaches at the Výrovice Reservoir are also accessible from Plaveč.

River valley, trails and nature

The varied valley of the Jevišovka near Plaveč invites you to explore on foot or by bike. A yellow-marked and a green-marked hiking trail pass through the municipality. Long-distance cycle route No. 481 from Jeseník to Znojmo also runs through Plaveč. The hiking trails are local, while the cycle route connects the two named endpoints over a longer distance—these are different scales to bear in mind when planning. This means that local trails and a long-distance cycle route offer distinct options.

In the Lapikus area, steep, inaccessible rocky slopes above the Jevišovka shape the landscape. They provide habitats for rare plant species. There are also relatively well-preserved natural woodland stands with rare species in the herb layer. Characteristic woodland types include woodrush beech forests and Hercynian oak-hornbeam forests, which transition into a form of Carpathian oak-hornbeam forest. The natural highlights therefore range from the varied river landscape to distinctive rocky habitats and diverse woodland types.

If swimming is also among your travel interests, alongside hiking and cycling, the bathing beaches at the Výrovice Reservoir are another destination. The bathing beaches at the Výrovice Reservoir are accessible from Plaveč.

The rotunda and its architectural history

The Plaveč Rotunda is a late Romanesque building dating from the first half of the 13th century; written records mention it as early as 1234. This early reference provides a second chronological point alongside the architectural dating. Plaveč Castle stands on the site of an earlier castle complex, and the rotunda is part of the castle complex.

In the 1830s, an Empire-style annex was added to the rotunda. A crypt was built beneath it in 1868, and the rotunda was restored in 2008. The late Romanesque building, the later extension and the crypt represent different stages in its history.

A striking detail is the bell dating from 1487, displayed in the open bell turret. It is one of the four oldest bells in the Znojmo District. A stone sculpture of four human faces looking in the four cardinal directions stands atop the stone lantern. The building’s form, bell and sculpture draw attention to different parts of the structure.

The rotunda also houses a tombstone dated 1557, belonging to Mariana Višňovská of Petrovac. Another cultural landmark is the branch church in Plaveč, dedicated to Saint Francis Xavier and the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. The tombstone and rotunda, on the one hand, and the dedication of the branch church, on the other, provide different historical and religious points of reference in the village.

Lapikus through the ages

Lapikus Castle also adds to the area’s historical attractions. It is believed to date from the second half of the 14th century; by 1508 it was already described as abandoned. In contrast, the rotunda dates from the first half of the 13th century. These dates point to different historical periods without assigning the castle’s presumed origins to a specific year.
