Lukov lies on the edge of Podyjí National Park. Several hiking trails cross wooded countryside above the Dyje Canyon; the village also features the ruins of Nový Hrádek Castle and the protected Church of St. Giles. This gives visitors a choice of different things to focus on during their stay: trails through the countryside, cycling routes and historic buildings.

Hiking and cycling in the countryside

Several hiking trails pass through Lukov, crossing wooded terrain above the Dyje Canyon. Those who like to take nature trails and a strong connection to the landscape into account when choosing a destination will find clear starting points here for a walking tour. The trails pass through Lukov; the surrounding landscape described is the forest above the canyon.

There are also two distinct sets of information to consider when planning a cycling trip. Cycle Route 5000EV13 passes through Lukov between Podmolí and Čížov. The “Na Nový Hrádek” cycle route is 12.5 km long; 40 percent of it runs along a cycle path. These details answer different questions: for Route 5000EV13, the route through the places mentioned is relevant, while “Na Nový Hrádek” is described by its total length and the proportion on a cycle path. Check the current signs and route configuration before setting out.

Nový Hrádek: a cultural monument accessible on foot and by bicycle

The ruins of Nový Hrádek Castle are open to the public as a national cultural monument. They lie within the cadastral area of Lukov and within Podyjí National Park. The type of access is important for your visit: Nový Hrádek can only be reached on foot or by bicycle; motor vehicle traffic is prohibited on the access road. Plan your visit as a walking or cycling trip, not as a drive in a motor vehicle.

Nový Hrádek was built shortly after 1358 by the Moravian Margrave Jan Jindřich Lucemburský. The castle complex’s historical context is therefore clearly distinct from the later traces at the Church of St. Giles in the village.

St. Giles and historical traces

The Church of St. Giles in Lukov is a protected monument. The present parish church was built in 1749 and is a Baroque church. A pillory dated 1609 still stands in front of it. The year 1749 refers to the church, while 1609 refers to the pillory: these two different objects provide distinct historical reference points.

Those who would like to take in striking landforms as well as buildings will find Hradiště, known as “Ostroh,” in Podyjí National Park near Lukov. It lies on a tongue-shaped promontory above the Dyje, which flows around it on three sides. This spur offers a different connection to the landscape than the wooded trails above the Dyje Canyon.

Seasonal wine offering

Vinařství Molík runs a self-service wine bar during the season. Visitors can buy wine there and enjoy it on site. As this is a seasonal offering, check its availability before your visit. This lets you include a wine stop as a separate activity without treating it as the same as the cultural and landscape attractions described as available year-round.
