You can experience milling technology firsthand at the Vodní mlýn ve Slupi in Slup: the Renaissance building is a national cultural monument and has four different milling mechanisms, which visitors can see in operation. There is also an exhibition on the development of milling from prehistoric times to the 20th century. The two offer distinct perspectives: the exhibition covers a long span of time, while the demonstrations focus on the milling mechanisms themselves.
The mill and its technical heritage
The Krhovicko-jaroslavický náhon runs alongside the mill. The canal is also a technical monument and is more than 30 kilometres long. This extends the technical theme beyond the building itself: the milling mechanisms and the long watercourse offer different scales at which to explore Slup’s technical heritage.
A different chapter in the history of fortifications
The Museum of Czechoslovak Fortifications of 1938 is housed in a reconstructed Type vz. 37, A-160 light fortification structure. Guided tours with a knowledgeable guide are organised there; availability depends on the museum’s visiting schedule. So if you want to plan a tour, check the current schedule. Unlike the mill, the focus here is on the history of fortifications, presented through a reconstructed structure.
Historic architecture in Slup
Panská rybárna offers another perspective on the architectural history of the area. The Renaissance building was erected on the site of a 16th-century fortress and served, among other things, to administer the surrounding ponds. While the mill is primarily explored through its technical mechanisms and the history of milling, the story of Panská rybárna leads back to an earlier administrative function and its connection with the ponds. These two Renaissance buildings therefore represent different historical themes.
Festivals of bread and wine
The Slavnosti chleba takes place every year at the mill in Slup and in the surrounding area. The festival includes performances by South Moravian folklore ensembles, a traditional market, demonstrations of old crafts and bread baking in field ovens. Exact dates and individual programme items may vary from year to year. If you are travelling for the festival, check the date and programme for the relevant year.
At the recurring Čulský košt, wines from small local winemakers and large wine producers from the Znojmo area are presented in April. The specific date and participating producers may also vary. The two events have different focuses: Slavnosti chleba features folklore and crafts, while Čulský košt centres on wines from producers of different sizes.
Routes through Slup
The long-distance Greenway Praha–Vídeň cycle route passes through Slup and connects Prague with Vienna. The Moravian Wine Route also runs through the village. Route markings may change, so check the current signage before setting off.
Your choice of focus makes a difference when planning your trip: the mill and historic buildings offer themes from cultural and technological history, while the festivals take place on specific dates throughout the year. If a festival or guided tour is the deciding factor, plan around the relevant date or visiting schedule.
