Krhovice offers a range of highlights for planning a trip: protected communities at Vraní vrch, river activities on the Dyje, and water engineering and architecture. The river is a place for paddling and swimming; the canals and St Bartholomew’s Church add a history of construction to these themes.

Vraní vrch: protected communities

The purpose of protecting the Vraní vrch natural monument is to safeguard xerothermic plant and animal communities on muscovite orthogneiss of the Krhovice Crystalline Complex. Endangered plants growing there include Bohemian star-of-Bethlehem, large-flowered pasqueflower, purple mullein and feather grass. Xerothermic describes communities adapted to warm, dry habitats.

The Dyje: paddling, swimming and camping

There is a watersports campsite on the bank of the Dyje in Krhovice. Krhovice on the Dyje is also the nearest place to go swimming. Separate from this is the Dyje paddling section from Krhovice to Hevlín: it passes through the Meandry Dyje nature reserve and is suitable for beginners. Camping, swimming and paddling therefore offer different ways to enjoy the river. Before going on a paddling trip, check current river conditions and practical safety guidance locally.

Two canals, different contexts

The Mlýnská strouha branches off the Dyje at the southwestern edge of Krhovice as an artificial water channel. It is a technical monument and is considered Moravia’s oldest water engineering structure. Its first written mention dates from 1302. The year 1302 is the date of its first written mention, not the year it was built. The Krhovice–Hevlín irrigation canal is also fed by the Dyje in Krhovice. A technical monument is a structure with a technical purpose and historical value; an irrigation canal carries water specifically to irrigate land.

St Bartholomew’s Church

St Bartholomew’s Church stands in the southern part of Krhovice, above the left bank of the Dyje and the Krhovice–Hevlín canal. It was built in 1861–1862. Two valuable Classicist tombs are located on the northeast façade of the presbytery. The presbytery is the chancel of a church. Classicist design is inspired by ancient forms; here, the style description applies to the tombs, not the church.

Hiking as another activity

Hiking is also one of the leisure activities in Krhovice. When choosing what to do, it helps to note the difference from the paddling route: paddling has a specific section from Krhovice to Hevlín that is suitable for beginners, while hiking offers another type of activity. You can weigh up whether a river trip or hiking better suits your planned stay, and make nature or construction history additional interests.
