The pilgrimage church, traces of an archaeological settlement and routes through the valley give Hluboké Mašůvky a range of reasons to visit. The town is located in the Jevišovická pahorkatina, in the Svatoňovec Valley. When looking for a holiday apartment, you can first consider whether your main interest is pilgrimage, cultural history, or a trip on foot or by bike.

A pilgrimage destination with set dates

The pilgrimage church of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary was founded in 1680. A Marian pilgrimage takes place on the first Saturday of every month; the annual main pilgrimage falls on the first Saturday and Sunday in July. This means that, in addition to the monthly event, there is a separate annual main celebration. If the main pilgrimage is the reason for your trip, you can plan around the July weekend.

The pilgrimage complex includes a Stations of the Cross, the Lourdes Grotto, the Holy Sepulchre and a Marian Way. Its more than 50 images depict pilgrimage sites in Czechia, Slovakia and Austria. Three wooden crosses stand on Calvary, with the Holy Sepulchre nearby. The Stations of the Cross chapels are also part of the site’s building history: the original wooden chapels from 1860 were later replaced by masonry chapels.

Hiking in the valley and across wooded heights

A green-marked hiking trail starts at Mariánské náměstí and runs through the valley of the Plenkovický potok. Along the way, it passes the outdoor swimming pool, Hlavatův mlýn, Bábovec and the ruins of Lapikus Castle. These stops are therefore all along a route that follows the valley and passes several local attractions. Markings can change over time; check the current route before setting out.

Another hiking route is the Jevišovka. It passes a shelter near Hluboké Mašůvky and continues over wooded ridges. This gives you a choice between a route through the valley and one that continues across wooded heights. Trail conditions and the state of the shelter may change; take this into account when planning your hike.

Cycling in the footsteps of the milling trade

There is also a local connection for a themed cycling route: the Mlynářská stezka runs through Hluboké Mašůvky on its Znojmo region route and focuses on the history of milling. Its focus therefore differs from that of the hiking trails, which run through the valley or across wooded heights. Route information may change; check the current route before setting out.

An archaeological trace of local history

The archaeological site of Niva, Nivky, Padělky is classified as significant and is associated with the municipalities of Hluboké Mašůvky and Plenkovice. It includes part of a fortified settlement with a pointed ditch and two inner palisade fences. This discovery offers a different perspective from the pilgrimage complex: here, the focus is on a fortified settlement, while the church, chapels and Marian pilgrimages shape the story of the town’s history.

The pilgrimage grounds are behind the church and less than 200 m from a bus stop. Check local transport connections before travelling. This makes it easier to match your specific reason for visiting—a pilgrimage date, local history, or a hike or bike ride—with your plans for your stay.
