Dolní Dubňany combines a location in the Znojmo Hills with marked cycle routes, nature-related attractions and a rich local cultural history. For orientation: the municipality lies between the catchment areas of the Rokytná and Jihlava rivers. Dolní Dubňany is also roughly halfway between Brno and Znojmo and is part of the South Moravian Region. These geographical reference points give the place a clear setting without requiring you to have a fixed itinerary in mind.

Landscape, spring nature and cycle routes

One seasonal nature attraction is walking in the surrounding area. In spring, walks can take you to hillsides where rare large-flowered pasque flowers grow, particularly near the Dolnodubňanská Reservoir, “Balaton.” This makes the experience specific to the spring landscape. If you prefer to explore nature through designated protected areas, the natural monuments of Široký and Ve Žlebě are also among the nature-related attractions mentioned here.

Široký covers 0.6515 hectares and protects narrow-leaved dry grasslands. Species mentioned there include the large-flowered pasque flower (Pulsatilla grandis) and the Bohemian star-of-Bethlehem (Gagea bohemica), as well as other rare plant and animal species, some of which are specially protected. Ve Žlebě covers 2.4831 hectares and overlaps with the Natura 2000 site of community importance CZ0622161. The designated area of Ve Žlebě is therefore larger; the information about Široký, by contrast, particularly highlights the dry grassland and the species found there.

Cycle routes also provide useful orientation. Marked cycle route No. 401 passes through Dolní Dubňany on the Moravský Krumlov–Horní Dubňany route, heading towards Třebíč. The also-marked Mlynářská Trail between Nové Město na Moravě and Hardegg likewise passes through the village. The endpoints distinguish the two route descriptions: Třebíč is given as the direction for route No. 401, while the stated endpoints of the Mlynářská Trail are Nové Město na Moravě and Hardegg.

Church, folk costume and traditional customs

The Church of St. Wenceslas dates from the mid-13th century. An archaeological area classified as ÚAN I has been recorded around it. Finds and settlement traces from several periods have been documented there: the Linear Pottery culture, the Bell Beaker culture and the Únětice culture, as well as the period from the Middle Ages to modern times. Thus, the church offers not only a building with a medieval history, but also archaeological connections spanning different periods.

Another local feature is the folk costume of Dolní Dubňany. It is considered a basic example of costumes from the Moravskokrumlovsko area and is classified as a West Moravian type. Its more recent history can be traced through two dated events: following the traditional Václavské hody in 2023, the local Chasa initiated the restoration of the costume, which had not been renewed for 170 years. At the 2024 Václavské hody, the first two couples wearing the renewed Dolní Dubňany folk costume were presented. The two years distinguish the start of the restoration from its later presentation.

Traditional spring customs also offer insight into local culture. In one of them, a girl carried the “Smrtolka,” wrapped in a feather bed; the other girls followed her, singing and moving the decorated figure to the rhythm. At each house, the girls buried the Smrtolka in its feather bed to welcome spring. This account describes a traditional custom, not a scheduled event. In 2024, local folk songs continued to be sung in Dolní Dubňany, and the so-called Kloboukový obřad was observed.
