A prehistoric hillfort, the remains of a medieval castle and Baroque monuments give Sobůlky a distinctly historical character. At the same time, mixed forests, fields, vineyards and pastureland shape the surrounding area. The village thus combines cultural history with opportunities for walks, hikes and cycling; cross-country skiing is also an option in winter. Local customs and wine events also offer seasonal reasons to plan a trip.

Early fortifications and Baroque monuments

The Vala archaeological site preserves a prehistoric hillfort with surviving fortifications. Next to it are the remains of a medieval castle. This sequence brings two clearly distinct historical periods into focus: the early fortification and the later castle. Anyone interested in the village’s history can keep this chronological context in mind when exploring Vala.

The Baroque heritage is also marked by specific dates. The statue of Saint John of Nepomuk dates from 1721 and is among Sobůlky’s nationally listed cultural monuments. The protected Chapel of St. Helena was built by the Dluhoš family in 1734. These two dates establish a clear chronological sequence for the monuments, while the hillfort and castle remains take us further back in time.

The Sobůlské Museum is an art photography gallery, adding a connection to photographic art to the historical themes. Together with the archaeological site, the statue and the chapel, it forms a cultural focus encompassing different kinds of local heritage.

Landscape and outdoor activities

The area around Sobůlky combines mixed forests, fields, vineyards and pastureland. Views from here extend across the Kyjovsko region to the White Carpathians; how far you can see depends on the weather. The landscape vista therefore reaches beyond the immediate surroundings, although the view may not be the same every day.

For outdoor activities, the municipality recommends walks, hikes and cycling; cross-country skiing is also possible in winter. Your choice can therefore depend on the season and the activity you prefer. One specifically named route is the Kyjovská Wine Trail: it passes through Sobůlky and then descends into the Kyjovka Valley. Its described route offers a sense of direction, while the other leisure options apply more generally to the area.

Customs and wine throughout the year

The Martinské hody takes place in the first half of November, lasts four days and preserves local traditional customs. The exact dates change each year. If you would like to include this celebration in your travel plans, check the event dates for that year in advance. This preserves the seasonal connection without assuming a fixed calendar date.

Another seasonal event is the wine tasting hosted by local winemakers around the turn of April and May. It features a wide selection of tastings from nearby municipalities and wine-growing areas. The date and participating winemakers vary. In contrast, the November Martinské hody focuses on local customs, while the spring tasting highlights wines from the wider surrounding area. The two events thus offer different seasonal reasons to visit Sobůlky.
