Josefov near Hodonín can be explored through three distinct aspects: its monuments, its wine and cellar landscape, and its festivals, whose dates can influence when you travel. The Prušánka flows just beyond the village; fields, vineyards and orchards shape the landscape. When choosing accommodation, it helps to start with a practical question: would you like to plan your stay around a festival date, include a wine tasting, or explore Josefov as part of a cycling tour?

Church and monuments add historical character

The present-day Church of All Saints was created in 1877 by converting a chapel. Another landmark in the village is the Baroque statue of Saint Anne, considered Josefov’s oldest monument. It stands on the edge of the village, on the road to Prušánky. The church and statue represent different historical periods: the conversion of a chapel in the 19th century and an older Baroque monument. North of Josefov, among the wine cellars, stands a monument to Saint Urban, the patron saint of winegrowers. It too reflects the connection between religious tradition and local winegrowing.

Winegrowing: cellar landscape and guided tastings

The Josefovské búdy are part of the local wine and cellar landscape. Vinařství Prath offers bespoke guided wine tastings for groups of up to 18 people; arrangements should be made in advance. The winery processes only grapes from its own integrated production. These are two distinct considerations for planning your trip: the group experience for visitors and the origin of the grapes used. If the tasting is the reason for your trip, arrange your visit with the winery in advance.

Festivals with their own dates and traditions

The traditional Trachten-Hody are Josefov’s largest annual event. As the dates change each year, be sure to check the date for the year of your trip. “Smrtnica” also takes place every year, on “Smrtná neděle” (Death Sunday), whose date follows the liturgical calendar. As part of this custom, a singing procession of girls walks through Josefov. At the stream, the figure “BABA” is undressed; the remains are then thrown into the flowing spring water. This sequence makes “Smrtnica” a distinct custom and clearly sets the festival apart from the Trachten-Hody.

Another festival combining winegrowing and tradition is “Zarážání hory”. It takes place every year in August and is open to visitors. Check the date and programme before travelling. This makes it easier to plan your trip around the festival without assuming a specific event date.

Factor the landscape and cycling route into your plans

Fields, vineyards and orchards give the surrounding area its rural character; the Prušánka flows just beyond Josefov. Cyclists also have a specific route to consider: the 56-kilometre “Malý hodonínský okruh” cycle route passes through Josefov. Check the current signage and route locally before setting off.

Plan your stay around your interests

Advance arrangements are important for a group tasting; if you are going on a cycling tour, include the current route in your plans. If you are not travelling for a specific event, you can discover Josefov through its monuments, wine landscape and local traditions. First decide which of these themes you would like to shape your stay, then choose your travel dates.
