The Slovanské hradiště gives Mikulčice a distinct archaeological focus: this well-preserved site from the Great Moravian period is a national cultural monument. A parish church, a cemetery chapel and museums also enrich the town’s history with architecture and winemaking. During your visit, you can choose from archaeological exhibitions, historic buildings and insights into the local history of winemaking.

Archaeology and views at the Slovanské hradiště

In its day, the Slovanské hradiště was an important political and ecclesiastical centre of Great Moravia. The Slavic missionaries Constantine and Methodius may also have worked there. The guided archaeological exhibition “KOSTEL” includes authentic remains of a 9th-century church, part of a burial ground and numerous artefacts. The “LODĚ” exhibition features two oak dugout boats dating from the late 9th century, as well as numerous audiovisual elements. A visit usually takes about 45 minutes. The exhibition opened in summer 2026; check its current availability before you travel.

A 30-metre-high observation tower offers views mainly of the early medieval hillfort site and its surroundings. On a clear day, you can also see the White Carpathians and the Slovak Little Carpathians. The view therefore extends from the hillfort itself to more distant mountain ranges—although this long-distance view depends on visibility conditions.

Walking and cycling routes

For a hike, the “Za Slovany a Vínečkem bílým” excursion offers a specific route: it starts on the village green in Mikulčice, follows the Vinařská podlužácká stezka directly to the Slovanské hradiště, and returns to Mikulčice via a blue-marked hiking trail. The excursion is 18 kilometres long, follows paved roads and field tracks, and is rated as easy. This lets you take the distance, terrain and return route into account together when planning your day.

The Smart Guide mobile visitor guide offers three routes around the Slovanské hradiště site, with photos, text and recordings. After downloading it in advance, you can use it without mobile data. Check the app’s availability before your trip.

Near Mikulčice, the Lávka Velké Moravy foot and cycle bridge connects the Slovanské hradiště with the Slovak part of the archaeological park. The Skařiny nature reserve also lies close to the hillfort. It includes meanders of the Morava River and a floodplain forest with breeding colonies of white storks and grey herons.

Church, chapel and museums

The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary (Nanebevzetí Panny Marie) reveals several phases of construction: its foundations date from the 13th century, its nave and chancel from the 15th century, and its tower was built in 1701. Inside the church is a distinctive, massive altar made from oak trunks found in the riverbed of the Morava. A Baroque statue of St Oldřich stands in front of the church. At the cemetery, the Chapel of St Roch (sv. Rocha) is another protected landmark: it is a national cultural monument, decorated with a painted Slovácko žudr.

Chalupa Fanoše Mikuleckého is a museum in his birthplace. Its exhibitions cover his life and work, alongside furnishings from the first half of the 20th century and a preserved wooden tobacco-drying barn. During current exhibitions, the cottage is open on Sundays from 14:00 to 18:00. Outside these Sunday opening hours, access is possible by prior telephone arrangement. Check the visiting arrangements before you travel.

Winemaking is also part of the area’s long-standing tradition. The Muzeum vinařství a vinohradnictví Mikulčice, the Mikulčice Museum of Winemaking and Viticulture, presents a themed exhibition on the history of winemaking and the wine trade in a column barn. It also offers a look at how its cider mill operates. This allows you to explore the history of winemaking as a cultural highlight in its own right, alongside the archaeological and ecclesiastical themes.

For two-wheeled tours, the Mikulčice Tourist Information Centre also offers bicycle rental. As availability may change, check this service before you travel.
