At the heart of Hýsly is a unique miniature solar system. It is a distinctive starting point for discovering the village’s landscape, cultural history and wine traditions. Specific dates can also play a part in planning your trip: the traditional Hodky celebrations take place in early July, and the Svatováclavské krojované hody are celebrated in September.

Between the Moštěnka and the Chřiby Hills

Hýsly lies in the Moštěnka Valley, beneath the southwestern foothills of the Chřiby Hills. Stromová kaple offers views of the mountain peaks. This gives the village a tangible connection to the landscape, alongside its historical and astronomical themes. A common ash tree in the castle park is designated as a memorial tree.

Sundials on two scales

The miniature solar system is located in the centre of Hýsly and includes the world’s smallest sundials. They measure 9 × 9 millimetres. Sundials measuring 14 × 20 metres offer another striking contrast in scale. They are designed to show astronomical time in the municipality of Hýsly. The combination of tiny and large-scale sundials makes the solar system a distinctive feature of a stay in Hýsly.

Chapel, column and castle

Saint Procopius is the patron saint of Hýsly. The Chapel of St Procopius was built in 1936. An older trace of the village’s history is the column with a statue of Saint John of Nepomuk: it dates from 1706 and commemorates a major flood. Together, the chapel and column reflect different periods and forms of religious remembrance.

Visiting Zámek Hýsly is subject to restrictions: the castle has been closed for a long time and is not in use. Before travelling, check whether access is possible rather than planning a castle visit as a certainty.

Traditions and wine cellars

The traditional Hodky celebrations take place in early July. In September, Hýsly celebrates the Svatováclavské krojované hody.

Above Hýsly, the wine cellar lane is a destination for locals and visitors. Local winemakers serve wine at the nearby cellars. Wine and local traditions can therefore be highlights of a visit; specific opening hours are not provided.

More places to consider when planning

There is a workout playground in Hýsly’s village square. Admission to Rozhledna Súsedská is free for everyone. Access is intended to be provided via existing and newly created hiking and cycling routes. Before visiting, check which routes are currently available. This keeps the planned route connections separate from the question of whether the routes are actually available.

When choosing a stay in Hýsly, you can first decide whether you are most interested in the sundials, historical sites, a festival date or the wine cellar lane. The time of year and the conditions at individual destinations are important when planning the details: the castle remains closed for a long time, while the festivals depend on their respective dates.
