A Renaissance scholasterium on the main square, a fortified medieval church complex and protected landscapes give Šlapanice several distinct facets. When planning a stay, you can consider cultural history, memorial sites and nature as separate areas of focus. There are also named routes for hikers and cyclists, each of which lists different places.
Cultural History and Memorial Sites
The Šlapanice Museum is located in the city centre, in a Renaissance scholasterium on the main square. The scholasterium was built in 1613. The same building thus brings together use as a museum and a specific date in its history. The museum presents exhibitions on a range of subjects, each complemented by a play corner or programmes for children. The cultural options therefore have two aspects: the Renaissance building and the subjects of the exhibitions, along with the children’s activities on offer.
The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary (“Kostel Nanebevzetí Panny Marie”) is Šlapanice’s oldest and most valuable architectural monument. The original Romanesque church was probably built at the end of the 12th century or the beginning of the 13th century. In the Middle Ages, the church was surrounded by a wall with bastions and formed a fortified church complex. The historical context therefore includes not only the church building itself, but also its former fortifications.
Šlapanice Castle was built as a country residence in the Rococo style around the second half of the 18th century. During the Battle of Austerlitz in 1805, it became a French military field hospital. The building’s history thus shows two distinct roles: country residence and field hospital. Stolpersteine (stumbling stones) are set into pavements in front of properties at several addresses. Their placement connects memorial sites with individual addresses across the city and complements the history of its major buildings with markers in the streetscape.
Nature and Landscape
The Andělka a Čertovka natural monument covers 3.37 hectares on steep slopes above the right bank of the Říčka, on the northern edge of Šlapanice. The Návrší natural monument protects heat-loving communities growing on Culm conglomerates within the cadastral area. The two sites therefore differ in the features described here: for Andělka a Čertovka, the focus is on its area, sloping terrain and riverside location; for Návrší, it is on the protected communities and their geological substrate. Velký hájek is almost entirely covered in deciduous forest. The Říčka also flows through the central part of the cadastral area, including the city, so the river is relevant both to the description of the landscape and to the location of Andělka a Čertovka.
Hiking, Cycling and Events
A yellow-marked hiking trail starts in Šlapanice and leads via Santon, Tvarožná and Jiříkovice to Prace. The Slavkov Battlefield cycle route follows the Sokolnice–Prace–Šlapanice route. Prace appears in both route descriptions, but the hiking trail ends there, while the cycle route is described as running from Sokolnice via Prace to Šlapanice. This difference helps distinguish the two routes by the places they mention. Route details may change, so check the route before setting out.
A traditional event in Šlapanice’s calendar is a Masopust procession on the Sunday afternoon before Ash Wednesday. The exact date varies each year, so plan your visit around the date for that year. These seasonal traditions complement the permanent architectural and landscape attractions with an event tied to a particular time of year.
