The Chapel of St. Otmar and interviews about community life give Otmarov a cultural focus. Gently rolling terrain, cycling tours and recreational facilities offer a different perspective on the village. If you are looking for a holiday apartment in Otmarov, you can plan your stay according to whether you mainly want to learn about local history or set aside time for outdoor activities.
Flatland, Watercourse and Agricultural Surroundings
Otmarov lies on a plain at an elevation of 188 metres; the surrounding gently sloping terrain rises to 205 metres. The elevation difference of 17 metres gives an idea of the gentle incline. The main watercourse is the Dunávka. The area’s intensive agricultural use is also part of its character: the land is farmed intensively because of its very favourable soil conditions and warm, low-rainfall climate. Soil and climate are therefore important prerequisites for agriculture in the area.
Cycling and Recreation
The gently rolling terrain and low rainfall are suitable for easy family cycling trips. The long-distance EURO-VELO route – the Amber Trail (Jantarová stezka) – is also recommended for more experienced cyclists. These two suggestions are aimed at different types of cyclists. If you include the long-distance route in your plans, check its current course in advance.
Otmarov’s leisure facilities include a landscaped multi-purpose sports ground, a tennis court and a relaxation area, all suitable for recreation. This provides a choice of local facilities in addition to cycling. Which of them will interest you during your stay depends on whether you would rather focus on sport or take a break.
Founding and Remembrance
Otmarov was founded in 1783 by Otmar Konrád, abbot of Rajhrad Monastery. A hundred years later, in 1883, the residents built the Chapel of St. Otmar to commemorate the community’s centenary. The two dates link the founding with a later communal memorial: Konrád founded the village, and the residents built the chapel.
Another historical account concerns the former settlement of Dunajovice. It disappeared, probably in the 15th century, as a result of a fire followed by plague. The cautious wording is important here: the link between the fire and the plague is passed down as a probable explanation.
The municipal project Kronika vzpomĂnek (Chronicle of Memories) includes interviews with eyewitnesses from Otmarov about life in the community. The interviews complement the dated accounts of the village’s founding and settlements with personal recollections of community life. If you are interested in this personal approach to local history, you can include the project in your exploration of Otmarov.
Otmarov’s cultural events include the Otmarovské hody, held in November. The specific dates may vary, so check them before travelling if you would like to plan your stay around the event.
Include the Bus Connection in Your Plans
The municipal development plan for 2022–2027 places Otmarov in Zone 510 of the South Moravian Region Integrated Transport System. It also lists bus route 509 on the MÄ›nĂn – Otmarov – Rajhradice – Rebešovice – Brno route and back. Transport information may change, so check the current timetable before travelling. This will allow you to plan your bus journey based on the departure times that apply to you.
