Žatčany combines historic buildings, a natural monument and an educational trail whose name evokes the municipality’s past and present. This offers different ways to plan your trip: architecture and local history sit alongside a circular route and the distinctive terrain of Písky. The details below will help you tailor your stay to your interests.

Local History Around Náves and the Church Complex

Náves is the oldest and largest historic area of the municipality of Žatčany and also has the highest concentration of monuments and public buildings. Visitors wishing to focus on local architectural history will find a clear focal point here. The Church of the Holy Trinity is considered one of the oldest churches in Moravia; a church probably stood on this site as early as the 12th century. Masonry and supporting pillars from this early building phase remain in its foundations.

The Chapel of St Mary Magdalene is part of the church complex. It was built in the Baroque style in 1616–1618 and is a protected cultural monument as part of the complex. Inside are a wooden altar in the form of the Holy Sepulchre and an artificial stalactite cave containing a statue of the saint. The church believed to have stood here in the early period and the Baroque chapel represent different eras in local architecture.

Tradition and Protected Landscape

The tradition of Svatomartinské hody, the Feast of St Martin, has been observed in Žatčany for around 400 years. It adds a cultural dimension to local history that is not limited to buildings. The Slavkov Battlefield Landscape and Heritage Conservation Zone also extends into the cadastral area of Žatčany, broadening the view of protected heritage to include the landscape.

Písky: Sandy Areas and Access

The Písky Natural Monument covers 2.24 ha in the cadastral area of Žatčany. Its loose sandy areas date from oil extraction carried out around 50 to 60 years ago. Scattered trees and shrubs grow among the sandy areas, while denser woody vegetation is found along the edges. Písky is protected for its abandoned spoil heaps and waste heaps, as well as for being a habitat for psammophilic flora and fauna. Psammophilic means sand-loving and describes the relationship of plants and animals to sandy habitats.

Písky can be reached across pathless terrain; it is more than 250 m from the road. Access conditions may vary depending on field conditions. Take this into account when planning if you are weighing a visit to the natural site against other priorities for your stay.

Educational Trail and Cycling Connection

The Žatčany Yesterday and Today educational trail has 15 information boards and forms a circular route just under 7 km long. It is aimed primarily at residents, but also offers interesting information for visitors to the municipality. For travellers who want to explore local history on foot, it combines a clearly defined circular route with a look at Žatčany yesterday and today. Unlike Písky, the educational trail follows a named route, while the approach to the natural monument is defined by pathless terrain; these provide different starting points for planning your day.

In Žatčany, the Brno Wine Cycling Trail intersects with a locally signposted cycle route. If you plan to include both routes in a cycling trip, check current cycling maps in advance.
