Popice brings together several travel interests: wine, religious architecture and protected nature. When planning your trip, it is important to consider the different ways to visit: Tour de sklep takes place annually, the wineries have their own terms for wine experiences, while the Vineyard Way of the Stations of the Cross is freely accessible. This lets you choose the focus of your stay.

Wine Events and Wineries

Tour de sklep is an annual wine event in Popice. Each edition and its dates vary, so check in advance when the edition you want to attend will take place.

The wineries also offer different ways to visit. The Gotberg winery building is an example of modern wine architecture. Wine tastings are offered there on a terrace with a beautiful view. Check the current opening arrangements before your visit. At the Sonberk winery, you can take a walk through the vineyards with an audio guide; check its current availability before visiting. Private guided tours with a guided wine tasting are offered on designated days by reservation. Availability may vary.

Church, Chapel and Stations of the Cross

The Church of St. Andrew is considered Popice’s most significant monument. It was originally a Romanesque building and was extensively rebuilt from 1696 to 1699. Its interior is Baroque. The church is usually accessible during regular services. As the service schedule may change, check it before visiting. The Chapel of St. Rosalia, St. Roch and St. Sebastian adds to the village’s religious buildings: it was built between 1716 and 1717.

Another way to experience heritage alongside the wine landscape is the Popice Stations of the Cross. It comprises 14 marble stations between the Sonberk and Gotberg vineyards and ends at the Gate of Life. The Vineyard Way of the Stations of the Cross is freely accessible and runs directly along the Moravian Wine Route. The site thus combines a clearly defined religious design with its location between the two vineyards.

Hochberk Nature Monument

Hochberk is a protected nature monument in the cadastral areas of Popice and UherÄŤice u HustopeÄŤĂ. Its protected habitats include xerothermic dry steppe grasslands and thermophilous Pannonian oak-hornbeam forests. This combination of habitats makes Hochberk a different focus from the buildings and wineries: here, the emphasis is on plant and invertebrate species. The protected area is home to numerous endangered and specially protected plant species, as well as significant invertebrate species.

The most important protected plants include Tatar sea kale (Crambe tataria), white broom (Chamaecytisus albus) and hairy flax (Linum hirsutum subsp. hirsutum). Visitors interested in the natural side of Popice can find specific points of interest in these species and the two distinct habitat types; heritage, by contrast, centres on architectural history and the Stations of the Cross.

Plan Your Journey

Popice is about 8 km from HustopeÄŤe and can be reached from there by car, bus, train or bicycle. If you travel by bus or train, check the latest connections before setting off. When choosing your travel dates, you can also consider whether a particular edition of Tour de sklep, a wine tasting or a reservation-only tour is important to your stay.
