In Sedlec U Mikulova, wine experiences sit alongside a diverse natural and cultural landscape. At Vinařský dům, visitors can enjoy guided tastings and learn about the history of the winery; Nesyt and Slanisko u Nesytu shape the views of wetlands and shoreline vegetation. Portz Island reveals traces of a designed landscape and a restored brick bridge. When planning your trip, it is worth deciding first what interests you most: wine, nature watching or historic buildings.
Wine Tastings and Events
Vinařský dům Sedlec offers guided wine tastings to the public, not just to guests of the guesthouse. Arrangements should be made in advance. The cellar tour at Vinařstvà Sedlec covers the history of the winery, the vineyards and grape processing. While the tasting focuses on the wine, the tour provides insight into these different aspects of the business. The programme may change, so check the current offer in advance.
During the summer holidays, the DegustaÄŤnĂ sklep is open to the public. As no exact visiting hours are provided, it is advisable to check the current opening hours before visiting. Events also have different focuses: the SedleckĂ˝ch vĂn Festival is an annual tradition featuring wine tastings and a cultural programme. SedleckĂ© vinobranĂ is a traditional autumn event that includes grape pressing, wine tastings and gastronomic specialities. Dates and specific offerings may change, so check them before your trip.
Nesyt, Salt Marsh and Steppe Landscape
Sedlec lies in the Pálava Protected Landscape Area and the Dolnà Morava Biosphere Reserve, under the auspices of UNESCO. Slanisko u Nesytu lies close to Sedlec, bordering the western shore of the Nesyt pond. The salt marsh, which covers almost seven hectares, is considered the largest in the Czech Republic. Plants growing at Slanisko u Nesytu include Hadà mord maloúborný, Panonská hvězdnice and Solenka Valerandova. Which plants are visible depends on the season.
Nesyt is the only pond in the Lednice pond system whose shores have retained their natural vegetation. Wetland plants grow in its reed beds, where greylag geese, divers and ducks regularly nest. The likelihood of seeing the animals also depends on the season. Nature interests extend beyond the shores: Skalky is covered by a flower-rich feather-grass steppe. Rare plants, as well as birds, praying mantises and smooth snakes, can be observed there; flowering and wildlife observations depend on the season. Skalky consists of numerous fossilised bodies of single-celled bryozoans and algae of the genus Litothamnium. These organisms lived in a prehistoric ocean.
Another natural attraction near Sedlec is the confluence of three streams, which is considered a notable natural sight. The area offers a range of nature-related themes: the vegetation around the pond, the salt marsh, the steppe and the geological feature of Skalky.
Portz Island and the History of Sedlec
Portz Island was the centre of an extensive designed landscape on the Moravian-Austrian border. Cardinal Dietrichstein had this landscape, close to the town, created in the 17th century. A notable architectural feature at Portz Island is the historic brick bridge with 15 arches. It has been restored and opened to visitors. The Portz Island project also includes a nature trail with six information boards and rest areas.
Buildings and memorial sites in Sedlec itself also offer historical points of interest. The Church of St. Vitus was remodelled in the Baroque style and rededicated to Saint Vitus in 1672. Panská sýpka has been an unusually large Baroque cultural monument since 1966. A statue of Saint John of Nepomuk, dating from 1717, stands on the road from Sedlec to Portzský mlýn. The history of Sirné lázně dates back to 1362.
Cycling via Nesyt to Sedlec
The Moravian Wine Trail runs from Hraničnà zámeček via the Nesyt pond to Sedlec. This makes a specific cycling route one option for planning your trip. If you include this route, check the trail conditions before setting off.
