The synagogue dating from the mid-16th century, a castle on a prominent rocky outcrop and protected nature at Svatý kopeček give a stay in Mikulov several distinct themes. If you are looking for a hotel in Mikulov, you can first consider whether you would like to focus on Jewish heritage, historic buildings, nature or wine. The different sites and activities offer a variety of ways to explore the town and its surroundings.
Jewish Heritage in Mikulov
The synagogue in Mikulov is the only synagogue of the so-called Polish type preserved in Moravia. Its core dates from the mid-16th century. The historic Jewish quarter also shapes this part of the town’s history: 45 of the buildings that have survived to this day are protected as immovable cultural monuments.
On the Jewish cemetery, the Rabbinical Hill is the most valuable and also the most visited section. It contains the tombstones of rabbis from Mikulov and Moravian chief rabbis. The synagogue, quarter and cemetery thus represent different aspects of the town’s Jewish heritage.
Castle and Historic Buildings
Mikulov Castle stands on a prominent rocky outcrop and has been a highly visible landmark of the town for several centuries. Today it is home to the Regional Museum in Mikulov and houses several exhibitions. The castle library contains around 11,000 volumes.
Another building connected with the town’s history is Kozí hrádek: this two-storey, late Gothic artillery tower was built on Kozí vrch in the 15th century. The Mikulov MJ-S 29 “SVAH” fortress has a visitor exhibition featuring weapons and other equipment and armaments of the Czechoslovak People’s Army. The castle, tower and exhibition each highlight different aspects of Mikulov’s architectural and military heritage.
Nature and Trails at Svatý kopeček
Svatý kopeček is designated as a nature reserve because of the rich variety of protected and rare plant and animal species found there. A species-rich rocky steppe grows on its southern slopes. The Svatý kopeček nature trail has a total of eleven information panels and includes a viewpoint above the quarry.
The location of Na Turold Cave can also be described geographically: it lies within the nature reserve on Turold, which rises to 385 metres. Turold is on the northern edge of Mikulov. The church tower of St. Wenceslas Church offers a different view of the town: visitors can climb its 135 steps for a panoramic view of all of Mikulov.
Nature Trail, Cycling Route and Wine Tastings
The “Po stopách novokřtěnců” nature trail is 1.5 kilometres long, runs through the streets of the town and is easily accessible and not demanding. Its five panels provide information about the short but fruitful period when Anabaptists settled in Mikulov from 1526 onwards. The introductory panel is in the town centre, next to the Dietrichstein tomb chapel.
Another way to explore the area is the “Mikulov – Around Mikulov, Svatý kopeček (Holy Hill)” cycling route. It is 4.8 kilometres long and has a difficulty rating of 1. The details for the two routes refer to different activities: an urban themed nature trail and a cycling route.
A stay in Mikulov can also include wine-tasting experiences: visitors can take part at renowned wineries, wine cellars and wine bars.
