Starovičky offers visitors a range of cultural, historical and scenic attractions. The Church of St. Catherine, the Way of the Cross and the U Obrázku observation tower represent different aspects of the town; they are joined by the Hanácké Slovácko folk costume tradition and recurring festivals. When planning your trip, you can therefore choose to focus on architecture, scenery or event dates.
Church and Way of the Cross
The Church of St. Catherine is Starovičky’s most important historical monument and a local landmark; it dates from the 15th century. Its form is reminiscent of single-nave Romanesque churches. “Single-nave” describes a church interior with one main nave. This distinction makes it possible to separate the Romanesque-inspired form as an architectural feature from the 15th-century dating. The Way of the Cross consists of 14 stations in the form of crosses made from steel profiles. The project for the Way of the Cross by Father Václav Drbola was established near historic stone wayside shrines dating from the 15th century; it was intended to connect these with the U Obrázku observation tower.
Views of the landscape
The current U Obrázku observation tower was built on the site of the former Vyhlídka U Obrázku viewpoint and was approved for use on December 11, 2020. From there, visitors can enjoy unobstructed views of the Pavlov Hills, the Pálava lakes and the Malé Karpaty Protected Landscape Area (CHKO). The tower also has a covered shelter with seating, providing a place to take a break at the viewpoint. The views offer a different focus from the church and Way of the Cross: here, the emphasis is on scenic destinations, while those focus on architectural form and religious tradition.
Folk costume and events
Starovičky is part of the Hanácké Slovácko region, represented here by a southern variant of the Haná-Slovak folk costume. The Krojové hody takes place on the fourth Saturday and Sunday in July. The program includes a festive procession of the Stárci and the costumed Chasa through the village, followed by an evening hody celebration. If you would like to plan your trip around this festival, take note of its recurring July date.
Another regular event organized by the Starovičky Winemakers’ Association is Zabíjačka s vinaři, one of the association’s two events with wine and folk themes. The Krojové hody combines folk costume, a procession and evening entertainment, while Zabíjačka s vinaři has a wine and folk theme. In terms of timing, the difference is practical: the Krojové hody has its recurring date on the fourth Saturday and Sunday in July; dates for Zabíjačka may change, so check the latest announcement.
Lavandia and wayside shrines
The Lavandia lavender farm adds a café to the local attractions. It serves homemade lavender lemonade, selected coffee, cakes and ice cream; the offerings may vary by season. The farm welcomes cyclists and provides bicycle racks in the lavender field. There is an information board and seating at wayside shrines near Starovičky. As visitor services may change, check the latest information before your visit.
