Bavory lies directly within the Pálava Protected Landscape Area and below the southwestern slope of the Tabulová National Nature Reserve. Local highlights include protected steppe habitats, the architectural history of the Parish Church of St. Catherine of Alexandria, and guided wine tastings at the Tanzberg winery. Nature, local history and wine offer different ways to shape a stay in Bavory.
Landscape and Visitor Rules
The Tabulová National Nature Reserve protects rocky steppes and extensive grass steppes. Bavory lies below its southwestern slope and directly within the Pálava Protected Landscape Area. A total of 130 species of higher plants have been recorded on Anenský vrch. It has steppe grassland with scattered shrubs, as well as specially protected plant and animal species typical of the rocky ridge of the Pavlovské vrchy. The figure of 130 refers to species of higher plants; the information about specially protected plants and animals should be understood separately. This means that different aspects of nature are represented side by side: the habitats in Tabulová and the species recorded on Anenský vrch.
In the Tabulová National Nature Reserve, you must stay on the marked trails; cycling is prohibited. Check the local signs before your visit. These rules are an important part of planning if you want to spend time in the reserve.
Church and Protected Monuments
The Parish Church of St. Catherine of Alexandria was built in 1741–1742 on the site of an older temple. The date of construction of this predecessor is unknown. In 1791, a bell stage was added to the church’s Renaissance tower. The dates therefore mark two separate building events: the construction of the church and the later addition to the tower. Local history thus brings together an older, undated temple site and two dated details.
A regular Sunday service at 11 a.m. is listed for 2026. Check the time before your trip if you plan to schedule your visit around it. The statue of St. John of Nepomuk in Bavory is a state-protected monument. The chapel on the state highway between Brno and Mikulov is also state-protected.
Location and Road Connections
Bavory lies on the main Brno–Mikulov–Vienna route. This provides a named road connection in addition to the landscape setting. By contrast, its location below the southwestern slope of Tabulová describes its relationship to the natural landscape. These two perspectives help place Bavory in context both within its landscape and along the road route.
Guided Wine Tastings
Guided wine tastings are offered at the Tanzberg winery in Bavory. Selected wines are presented with explanations. The format therefore combines tasting and commentary. Confirm booking details directly with the winery in advance, as they may change.
These topics raise different planning questions: visitor rules are important in the reserve, the church’s building events can be placed in chronological context, and you should confirm the booking details for the wine tasting in advance.
